Video Codec Conversion

I am trying to get a file to play on my PS3. The file is in .avi format, as are almost all of my files. I am thinking that the problem would be the codec used in the .avi file that is not able to play. I can not find any programs that will convert the codecs for this files to MPEG-4 w/ MP3 like the rest of my files. If anyone knows of an idea, please let me know.

Yes probably the cause. Use Ps3 Media Server streaming app on your PC.

You can either stream from PC using one of the #transcode folder options with PS3 Media Server or connect to PS3 Media Server, browse to the file and press triangle\copy and PS3 Media server will transcode to MPEG2 and copy the file over.

I tried this method, but my PS3 was never recognized by the program. It also seems to be set up to stream video, where I would prefer to have my files stored on my external hard drive that is attached to the PS3.

If it's not seeing your PS3 then 99% of the time it's a firewall issue on your PC stopping it.

Yes it's a streaming app but it will also transcode files to a PS3 friendly format if you press triangle\copy on the PS3 while browsing files. You can then copy it down to the PS3 int HDD and then off to your USB HDD if you prefer.

I tried to allow the program on my firewall, but it still did not work. I tried forcing the IP address too, but the port i think may be wrong, where would I find that?

I have tried changing it a few times, the problem is what to change it to though. Any time I have the port to anything other than default I get "FATAL ERROR: Unable to bind on port: 99 cause: Cannot assign requested address:bind" in the trace log. It seems fine up until then.

Sorry not seen that one before at all. There is a dedicated forum here PS3 Media Server • Index page If you post the debug.log saved at C:\Program Files\Ps3 Media Server over on there I'm sure you'll get offered a fix for that pretty quick.
