MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
Just installed Vista ultimate yesterday and I have a folder on my desktop with films in, divx and xvids. When trying to access the folder from mce it crashes out. Now ive read up on it and tried things but nothing is working, ive uninstalled all my codecs and now only have xvid installed, i even tried divx 5.21 but no go.
My pc spec
E6420 Core2duo
3gb Corsair ram
3x500gb sata2 hdd's
3xsata nec dvdrw's
ATI 2900XT gfx card
Gigabyte P35-DQ6 mobo
any help appreciated as its now really doing my head in.

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
You need this version of ffdshow here
I had the same - 'Media Center Has Stopped Working' problem, this fixes it.
Just install it and run the configuration - you don't really need to change anything.

How did you arrive at the solution that ffdshow is the fix?

I got it Here
I'd tried loads of codecs, done a failed repair install to try and fix divx crashing media center, so had to re-install from scratch before i found this solution.

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
the problem has re-occured, for some reason now after hooking my xbox360 to the pc and using mc its doing the same thing, the xbox freezes when viewing the folder and the pc has started freezing again if i try to access the folder with mc, ive reinstalled ffdshow but its no better.

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
I must say that after using xpmce2k5 for a few years and now on to vista ultimate it makes me want to go back. It really is the worst piece of software ive ever encountered, I mean how difficult can it be to have divx/xvids working in media center? It managed to work flawlessly in xpmce and not once did I have a problem but this has me installing and uninstalling stuff and still no joy.
I think i'll go back to xp as it was just so much easier, cant even use simple stuff like epson printcd on vista

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
Been digging into this for 2 days solid now and think the problem lies with nero, alot of people have problems with nero on vista with themedia center. I uninstalled my slightly older version of nero (still apparantly vista compatibale) and installed the very latest 7.8.5.0 and although media center doesnt crash it just says my chosen folders are empty apart from the ones with .vob files in, it wont even pick up .wmv stuff let alone .avi. There seem to be some registry tweeks but I cant work out how to input them into vista.
So, media center no longer crashes but doesnt recognise any video files
lets see what tomorrow brings

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
In my Vista set up, there's 2 locations for movies - DVD Library (using the reg hack). This is on the same line as Live TV, Guide etc...and this plays ripped DVD's.
Then there's Video Library, in the Photos/Videos menu. This plays all other types of video files
It's a bit of a pain having them split up like this but it's the only way I know to get Vista to play them all.

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
All i want is to play xvids from mc, I cant seem to find a way for media center to 'see' the files, it lists the folders i've chosen with my films in but the only things that it sees are the ripped dvd's ie folders with vobs in.
never in my life have I known anything so silly, how hard can ms make it?

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
I actually cant see any vobs in the folder, my mistake. I cannot see ANY video files of any kind from media center, I can search the folders ive added but no files. Is there a proper fix for this without messing around with the registry?

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
I'm getting this too at the moment (upgraded to a new PC and Vista at the weekend).
Media Center just doesn't appear to find the media I've put in the video folders. It's probably something odd I've done though.
I got the connection to the 360 (within the dashboard) working last night - I'd forgotten to setup the sharing in Media Player 11.

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
at least i'm not alone with this problem, I can stream everything else and view it all in media center on the pc no probs but its just video files that are not showing up, using media center on vista for the first time and it would crash trying to load thumbnails for avi's but installed ffdshow and problem sorted, then mysteriously the problem returned and after trawling through the net I found that nero can cause probs, uninstall nero and I get to where I am now, no crashes but no recognition of video files

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
Ahh hang on, maybe this will help?
Seems it can be to do with associations, can't think why mine might have screwed up but are you in a position to test it out? I'm at work.

Re: MCE in Vista crashing when trying to view folder with xvids/divx
Andy, huge thanks mate, that little fix works a charm. Funny thing is its just so simple. Only problem now is that my pics arent seen in the folders, music and videos are good now although viewing the folders from the 360 is very clunky and hangs a bit, not as useable as mc2k5 but for now it will do.
