Vista Disk Space

My Father has a new Laptop with Vista Premium. He has installed it fine but I noticed that 39GB of space is being used. Even my XP computer with tonnes of programmes is only 10GB.

How do I reduce system restore points to just keep the last one? I can't find it in Vista.

Re: Vista Disk Space

I don't the answer to your question, but if he has the home premium version or lower, then vista makes a summary backup of nearly everything done on the pc and you can't get at present get rid of the backups, so the hard drive will fill up fast.

Good luck mate

Re: Vista Disk Space

Did your father install Vista over XP ? If so, there may be a folder called Windows.old which holds the XP files - this is about 35Gb on my machine. If this is the case he can delete them if he is sure all his documents have survived the Vista install.

As for System Restore, you can find it at Computer>Properties>System Protection then "Create a restore point or change settings", or by typing restore in the Start Search box in the start menu - the first found should be the Backup and Restore Center.

It was a new Acer 5103WLMI laptop with Home premium on it. It installed when the computer was switched on for the first time.

Re: Vista Disk Space

I was reading it wrong. It was 39GB free not used. I managed to delete all but the last restore point and go 5GB back.

Re: Vista Disk Space

Why don't you disbale System Restore Checkpoints. And reinstalling the OS afresh. If it came from an OEM, it must have a load of preinstalled junk on it.
