XP BSOD. should i upgrade to Vista
Been suffering the blue screen of death on my XP home computer. The PC is reasonably powerful and could certainly run Vista comfortably. Should I go ahead and upgrade to Vista and would this solve my BSOD problems I am currently having with my PC ?
Any advice would be appreciated

Does xp have a blue screen ? Why not go crazy and try Vista for a day. At least if you don't like it you can go back to xp.

What do you want Vista for exactly? For most users it isn't an advantage. For many users it will just make their PC go more slowly.
I would be inclined to just fix the cause of the BSOD (which almost certainly isn't Windows anyway). You'll be obliged to get Vista soon enough with the next new machine you buy. Why buy it twice?

Re: XP BSOD. should i upgrade to Vista
what error code does the BSOD give? It may not even be windows related and moving to vista will probably open a box of a whole load of new errors unless your good with pc's

Re: XP BSOD. should i upgrade to Vista
when I start windows before the login screen i get messages saying drives weren't found, if i hit continue on these errors i can login. Once in I will normally get the BSOD after a couple of mins, main message on screen is "beginning psychical memory dump"
Does this indicate a virus ? Would this effect any upgrade to Vista ?

Re: XP BSOD. should i upgrade to Vista
Re-installing XP will likely fix your BSOD issue, by the sounds of things.
Before you do, give these a go (in order) :
Trend Housecall
CCleaner
Windows XP SP2
If it still BSOD's after cleaning, and re-applying SP2, then it's time for a rebuild.
** Vista is not any 'better' than anything else, and installing it will not fix any problems, if anything it will only cause new ones. **

If you were more specific (like quoting the entire error message, letter for letter) the answer would probably be evident.

Re: XP BSOD. should i upgrade to Vista
paste the error code it will be like "0x000000xxx00021" something along those lines. If the message disappears to quickly change windows to do a full memory dump which takes around 60seconds and gives you plenty of time to note down the full code.

Re: XP BSOD. should i upgrade to Vista
You should fix the BSOD of death first, as if its caused by a hardware issue, Vista will also BSOD, then we'll have a new "Vista is BSOD'ing on my new install" thread.

Re: XP BSOD. should i upgrade to Vista
Amazingly i have had a look over my old posts and stumbled over this. Nearly a year ago I started this thread appealing for help lol !
So after almost a year of decorating and renovating my house i will finally get round to attempting to fix my sick PC and turn her into and all singing and dancing HTPC (well XP home running MediaPortal).
Will let you know how i get on, as no doubt i will have more questions !
