Re: Wiiware

Not to dampen the mood - but the notion of WiiWare was only officially announced today (though rumoured for a long time - and even hinted at by internal staff).

Original content which will be delivered through the Wii Shop Channel will start to appear in 2008.

WiiWare: Original Downloadable Games on Wii
Nintendo launching the WiiWare Channel next year
by Rob Burman, IGN UK

UK, June 27, 2007 - Nintendo has announced that original downloadable games are heading to Wii thanks to the WiiWare Channel with the aim being to let developers both large and small distribute their titles on the service. Unfortunately, the bad news is that it's not launching until early 2008.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Amie explained that WiiWare is a chance for smaller and more creative games to be made available to Wii owners, with little or no risk to the developer. According to Nintendo the "remarkable motion controls will give birth to fresh takes on established genres, as well as original ideas that currently exist only in developers' minds".

Reggie added: "Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit. WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners."

WiiWare titles will be available in the Wii Shop Channel and, just like Virtual Console games, can be purchased using Wii Points. Likewise, a variety of pricing options are planned. Nintendo is set to announce more details on WiiWare, including pricing structure, at a later date.

Re: Wiiware

According to the BBC:
"Nintendo said the first games would be available for download in early 2008.

Once quality tested by Nintendo, games created via the WiiWare service will be put on the Wii Shop channel so owners can download them.

Wii owners must spend points to get the games. Owners buy Wii points by credit card or by purchasing cards in stores"

If the games need to be developed and then passed back to Nintendo for testing before being released via the virtual console (at a cost), Wiiware will need to released soon (if not already) if games are to be available early next year.....

WiiWare is a concept, not a physical entity - (think Touch Generations).

Those who will be creating the first batch of games will already have the dev kits and documents.

Re: Wiiware

It sounds pretty cool, although my first impression - that it would be available for general use (i.e. bedroom coders, Amiga-stylee) has now been dashed, and it appears that it's only going to be available to "proper" independent developers.

As the Wii remote uses Bluetooth technology games can be created for it and distributed via PC.

Also it doesn't mean Wiiware won't extend to more bedroom coders eventually.
