Driift Mania

Just wanted to recommend this game to any fans of the old top-down racers like Super Off Road. This new game is a fantastic wiiware purchase! There are loads of different cars and race-types to choose and each car handles differently.

There are only a few tracks but because there are so many cars, each time you play it tends to be different. The game is brilliant in multiplayer as you both work out the best way to handle the car and the best route on the track.

I'd give this game 9/10

Re: Driift

Thanks for the heads-up, will give it a look. Don't suppose there's online multiplayer?

Re: Driift

Unfortunately no, there isn't online multiplayer. Just local for up to 8 players. So if you can find a friend or two then it's great fun. Luckily my friend comes round once a week for a gaming night so I get to play all my multiplayer games with him.

Just wanted to add in here that this game is FANTASTIC .

Up to 8 players locally
32 vehicles each with their own characteristics
15 individual tracks (4 classes Track/Mud/Snow/Special/Arena with three tracks each)

YouTube - DRiiFT MANIA

Now the "arenas" are really tracks that are quite open that crisscross so you can meet oncoming traffic, but in my mind they're still tracks so that make 12+3 total despite the video separating them out into their own category.

The tracks are great and varied enough that I haven't got bored yet .

Plus, there are a MASSIVE amount of vehicles to choose from, each suited to various tracks......for Track you'll want a road based car like a street racer, go kart or F1 car.....whereas for mud you might want something that drives well on mud (tank) or simply "ignores" it's surface (hovercraft).....or for snow you might specifically want a heavier vehicle that won't slip and slide everywhere like a bus or a cement mixer.
This means that there are an exhaustive amount of combo's you can experiment with. Added to this, if you're going for a mix'n'match or random group of tracks, you'll end up with a car that performs well on some surfaces but worse on others, thus "evening out the field" somewhat (so you can't just pick an "ubercar" and win everything - makes it more fun imo).

The reason I mention this now is that I got this last spring but have only just got round to using it to it's full potential. The other day, there were 8 of us having a right old laugh literally most of the day . The controls are either wiimote or, by attaching a nunchuk, that becomes a separate player (just remember to sit next to them to avoid any wire tugging). It will also recognise the classic controller as well and they all work really well (it's just, Left/Right and Accelerate/Brake).

Load times are fast and the number of games available is also great:

Championship type races: you choose the number and type of tracks or each one individually or just hit random. Most number of points/wins at the end wins the tourney

Team races: Same as above but you choose which team you're on (black or white). Whichever team has the most points/wins, wins. More fun because rather than a free for all, it's now more tactical and if you're nearer the back of the pack, you might instead opt for blocking/hitting the opposition to give your teammates a chance to in instead.

VIP: in teams and one of you is randomly selected as "starred". Your teammates have to then protect you and make you beat the opponent teams starred vehicle. The most confusing one (as the starred player can change randomly too) but still an OK option.

Infected: My fave . You all drive around the track. After one lap, whoever is last becomes infected (spouts green fumes) and has to try and infect everyone else. At this point it's no longer a race but more of a survival game so you end up driving around the track in any way you please trying to not get tagged by the infected bloke. Plus, once someone gets infected by them, then they also have the job of infecting everyone else , which mens you can end up driving around trying to avoid 7 cars trying to hunt you down . Great fun. After a set time limit, whoever is left standing wins, or if everyone is infected then whoever lasted the longest gets the most points.

Hot potato: Same as the above but reversed of sorts. This time, you all make a bee-line for a potato randomly spawned on the track. You now have to avoid other people trying to tag you to gain posession of the potato. At the end, whoever has had it for the longest accumulated time wins (can be tracked by the coloured bars at the top of the screen).

Meteorite: another great one, drive around the track as per normal but this time trying to avoid the meteorites (which, naturally, come down thicker and faster as the race progresses). It's quite tricky to reach the end but the people who finish get the highest points. More often than not, instead everyone will die at some point (burned to a crisp from an exploding meteor) and the folk who did the most laps get highest scores

Multiplayer: I understand the attraction of online to people but I think here that local multiplayer, where you physically have 7 other people around you whilst you're racing them, makes this all the more fun. It's a shame that this game won't get the exposure it deserves becuase many won't give it the time of day without online, but seriously, try it and see. It's FAR more fun (imo) to have other folk with you in the room to play against than "electronic"/virtual - and that's really where this game shines.
I took the time to slowly unlock everything (at which point I've usually become some uberleet master what with all the hours I've put in), but here that's not the case.
You could, in all honesty, unlock everything within a couple of days as it's not too hard. PLus, you can unlock everything in multiplayer matches (which is what I mainly did) and it's done so easily that you have unlocked it all but haven't had the time/effort to really improve much.
This is perfect imho - I was just as bad/good as the 7 others playing so it felt more fair to me, with me losing many races and winning some others. Why can't all game unlocks be like this .

Overall, with the amount of fun I had with a room full of people I would honestly have to give this game a 10/10 score.....definitely worth the 800points asking price...

More from Nintendo here.

I agree entirely with you Gaffer and thanks for bumping this thread again as it's such a great game and one that as you said will probably get ignored (as do most WiiWare games).

I think you were very lucky to have an 8 player session as this is probably a very rare occurance for most people. I only have one other friend to play games with unfortunately and most other people I know tend to be 360 fanboys and dismiss the Wii as a toy (although interestingly Microsoft and Sony are now copying the "toy").

I think this game is another example of what a gold mine the WiiWare service is as it regularly offers fantastic and innovative games as well as some classic, retro-inspired one's such as DM.

It's funny but I was playing this a couple of nights ago after someone reminded me about it while playing the xbox live indie game Little Racers(well worth checking out if you have a 360 BTW, although mainly for the online).

Driift Mania is a cracking little game, sadly I very rarely get friends around our house these days and when they do they come with their wives and we usually all end up playing board games as they're far more sociable(and my missus only likes a handful of video games such as Zuma and Zoo Keeper etc.).

Had I had this game 10 years ago, it would have received untold hours of local multiplayer. If only it had online

Played Driift Mania for a while over a friends house a few months back but unfortunately it suffered from only the two of us playing it and as you said, no online.

The game itself is fine, akin to Super Off Road / Supercars I&II but nowadays games like this need something more than just AI opponents. I hope that for this, or the next Wii, they seriously improve the application of online MP.

Think I'll have to give Little Racers a go though but sssssh don't tell AfxTwn, he thinks I'm a traitor.

Have a look in the thread, there's a few good vids there and as you can see there's a pretty decent sized group of us from here that get together for some fun online games, think there were 8 last weekend as was a great laugh.

http://www.avforums.com/forums/xbox-...le-racers.html

Obviously not as polished as Driift being a bite-sized budget Indie Game, but well worth the £2.04 asking price
