Wii keyboard (wired/wireless) discussion thread

i have plugged a philips wired keyboard into a usb socket on my wii and it doesn't work. is there a setting to be used ?

i updated the software (3.1E) about 6 mnths ago, back then it was understood that this enabled keyboards. any suggestions ?

Re: keyboard compatibility

There is a Keyboard Compatibilty list here:

http://www.wiili.org/index.php/Wii_K..._Compatibility

...but this is not official and isn't really complete (I use a Cherry Industrial one and it works fine).

The newest firmware is 3.2E. Try updating to that and seeing if it works.

Yes, I tried updating the fw and it still doesn't work.

How do the wireless keyboards work with the Wii ? Do they come with a dongle ?

I think a wireless one would be better as you still have to use the Wii remote and that only seems to work from further back.

Re: keyboard compatibility

You can't use wireless keyboards with the Wii. The only ones that will work are standard wired USB ones and even then not all of them seem to work.

I know someone who has confirmed they are using a wireless keyboard.

Hmm... well I haven't had a look at that link before. I may be mistaken although I've not heard of anyone mention that they have used a wireless keyboard and/or mouse. If that list is correct then I am obviously mistaken. I guess it all comes down to a driver issue and which keyboards wireless or wired are compatible with what ever standard USB driver the Wii uses.

Re: If you are using a wireless keyboard, which one ?

I guess Logitech DiNovo Mini would be, in many ways, the ultimate keyboard for consoles like Wii, but I guess it's only optimized to work with PS3. Anyway, I'd love to hear if anyone has tryed out DiNovo Mini with Wii.

Re: keyboard compatibility

I couldn't find anything "official" from nintendo btw.....only some info on the firmware update that allowed it stating that USB keyboards should now work.

Nintendo assumes that ALL wired ones will work so I don't think it has a maintained list anywhere .

P.S. Rather than have multiple threads about such a specific topic, this will be the main "all keyboard discussion" thread, so i'll merge your other one into this.

Re: Wii keyboard (wired/wireless) discussion thread

Does anyone know if Nintendo intend to release a wireless keyboard for the Wii? I would like to see one with an incorperated pad/track ball as I find using the wand a bit difficult on the internet channel.

Re: Wii keyboard (wired/wireless) discussion thread

I tried a rather eldery LogicTech wireless keyboard on my Wii and it seems to work fine...

Only problem is that when I hit return it doesn't take that as a click on the OK button, but I'm not sure if an official Wii approved Keyboard would do that anyway..

tbh i don't see them doing this cos its a waste of time. They should be focusing on their 1st party games imho....

we'll see.... most unlikely though....

Re: Wii keyboard (wired/wireless) discussion thread

That link I posted above no longer works so I will try to maintain an up-to-date list of Wireless Keyboards here:

Mice: Apparently DO NOT work.

Wired KB: They ALL should work. All wired ones should adhere to a basic common standard and that driver will be present in the Wii (AFAIK all wired solutions work for the common keys (like QWERTY...., Shift, Backspace etc).....some of the more "esoteric" / "specialist" keys (like "open mail", "next track" etc) may not though)

Wireless KB: Here is a full list of wireless wii keyboards that we know are compatible with the Wii (I think all of these come with their own BT dongles).

Avent ADE-AD2
AGK 100-50
Gyration GP9110
INNOVERA Wireless Keyboard
Logic 3 Keyboard for Game Pad (Wii)
Logitech EX110 Wireless Desktop
Logitech LX 710 Wireless Desktop
Logitech MX 3200 Laser
Logitech Cordless Desktop S510
Logitech Cordless MediaBoard For PS3 (& pro)
Logitech Cordless Wii Keyboard
Logitech Di Novo Mini
Microsoft Wireless Laser Keyboard 6000 v2.0
Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000
Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 3000
PC Line PCL-K350

Here are some Keyboard/Wiimote Shortcuts:

Media Keys do nothing
F4: show/hide words help filling
Backspace: Previous page.
Alt + Backspace: Select "Quit" in the Wii virtual keyboard screen/Return
Alt + Enter: Select "OK" in the Wii keyboard screen/Accept/Enter
Alt + Escape: Return
Alt + Spacebar: 2 spaces
Ctrl + Spacebar: 2 spaces
Ctrl + Alt + E: Euro sign "€" (not shown on old keyboards)
Ctrl + Left arrow: Previous page.
Ctrl + Right arrow: Next page.
Up Arrow: Scroll page up.
Down Arrow: Scroll page down.
Left Arrow: Scroll page left.
Right Arrow: Scroll page right.
+ Sign: Zoom in (also num pad).
- Sign: Zoom out (also num pad.

I have a microsoft wireless keyboard that works perectly.
It uses a usby dongle that I guess picks up the signal and then acts as though it were a wired keyboard. It's actually a combined mouse/keyboard set although the mouse doesn't work with the wii obviously.
