Connecting Wii to Denon Amp via Component

Hi all

I have a friend who has a rear projector which he uses to view Sky HD and play games via the Wii on.

He has a Denon amp (forgive me, don't know the model) but it's quite new and has HDMI on it etc.

He has previously only played the Wii through the amp via a composite connection.

We bought a component lead for the Wii last night (official Nintendo) and couldn't get the picture going properly. All we got was black and white. We also had difficulty in getting sound as we could not see on the back of his amp what audio channels corresponded to the component channels.

I saw 2 component channels which were labelled "monitor". We didn't use either of those.

There were 3 further component channels - when we plugged in the component leads all we got was a black and white picture.

Is it possible that the Denon amp will not put out a proper picture via component if it has a HDMI device running through it (like a Sky HD box) ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Connecting Wii to Denon Amp via Component

i have both, so may be able to help a bit...

the monitor connection you saw, is the 'output' via component to a monitor...

so you may need to plug from amp to wii via component and also from wii to screen ( i do ) as the amp cannot convert component input to an hdmi output....

you'll have to read the manual to see about assigning audio inputs to video inputs...

( ie.. audio optical one... to be used when using component input one...)

quite easy once you figure out how...

As for black and white.... did you have the three component plugs in the right order?

I have the AVR1910 and have the Wii going into the Amp and out through the HDMI to the TV, in fact, the only out from the Amp to the TV is the HDMI one. I'd agree it's not the easiest thing to set up when you first get it. I think to confirm though we'd really need the model number of the denon.

Also agree with the black and white, sounds a lot like something is not connected right. Have you got the feed into the telly set to the correct basis, I think that if you feed an RGB signal into a TV set up as SVHS you get black and white and vice versa.

Re: Connecting Wii to Denon Amp via Component

Thanks for the replies chaps.

The amp belongs to a friend of mine. I'll get the model number ASAP.

Thanks again for your help.

Sure, how are you planning to connect the Wii to the amp? Have you got the Wii component cable or are you doing it some other way?

Just to confirm, the newer denons will upconvert from analogue to HDMI. I have my wii connected to my 1910 via component and amp to TV via HDMI, its being upscaled and looks lovely!

Once you've connected the component lead to the amp (including the two audio pins) you will need to assign the inputs on the amp. Video and audio will need to be assigned seperately so just remember which input you connected the video leads to (red/green/blue) and audio leads to (red/white) assign them in your amps menu and that should work!

Cheers

Spot on - that's exactly what I've done as well, looks much better than the standard wii to telly route.
