Worth buying a wii?????

Hi there guys is it worth buying a wii console these days? I see lately in game the console is plastered everywhere with the new tennis games and tiger woods coming out so im wondering if now is the time to finally buy one. Would it be worth it? I would be looking to buy it to see what it offers and what games there are for it. Like the idea of downloading the old 64 games but any good ones out there like Zelda/goemon any of them? Also is it a console you would play constantly or something you would pick up for 10 mins and never use again? Thanks guys

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

The Conduit is out today, that alone is worth a Wii

stay away from mini games and multiformate games(unless its something thats been tweeked to perfection control wise and that versions been build from the ground up to work with the Wii and not just a PS2 multiformat port like most) and you'll have a great console with some fun games, thats where so many people go wrong with it and leave it to gather dust,

I'd recommend

Zelda Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime 3 (the Trilogy is being remade and all on 1 disc coming soon)
Super Mario Galaxy
Mario Kart Wii (addictive online with friends)
Super Paper Mario
No More Heroes
MadWorld
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition (must buy!)

and many more

apart from Metroid Prime Trilogy and The Conduit stay away from all other First Person Shooters on the Wii especially Red Steel lol

plenty of virtual console games to download for, Nes, Snes, N64, Master System, Mega Drive, C64, Turbografx, NeoGeo, VC Arcade and WiiWare, plus 100% backwards compatibility with Gamecube games, just need a GC controller and memory card and away you go lol

We got one free with a mobile phone contract...

The misses plays on it from time to time, but she has bought a lot of truly dreadful games. There seem to be an awful lot of rubbish available for it. Sure there are a few gems, but would I buy one personally? To be honest I doubt it. The whole waving your arm around thing wears thin rather too soon and the controller is very hit and miss and goes through batteries at an alarming rate. Don't like sounding negative, but it's just my opinion.

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

My advice, buy a PS3 or 360.

My Wii has been sitting collecting dust untouched for a year now.

Prob played it for 2hours maybe 3 total at most since buying in 2007.

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

Well guys already have a ps3 and 360 and all im playing on the 360 atm is madden 09. Like the idea of the new madden on the wii tho like waving to throw with your arm etc sounds really kool. So do the pro evo games and fifa 09. Sounds a good console thing is would i really play on it often or not or would it collect dust? I mean there are some quite good looking games on it if you look round. Is there any good releases coming up within the next year or 2 either to warrent a purchase or is it a dying console? Thanks guys

There is strong rumor that in this time a new updated Wii-HD console is coming.

Much sooner than this (and possibly even before Christmas) is the rumor of a entirely 45nm Wii model Console that is entirely passively cooled (and also a possible price drop with it).

Maybe if you can wait you can get either one of these.

I don't know where you heard this rumour and maybe you should list some links. I haven't heard anything and I very much doubt that is going to happen anytime soon. The Wii has been selling incredibly well and continues to sell well so there is no reason for Nintendo to release an updated model this soon. It may well happen but it's most likely going to be longer then that.

Regards not buying the Wii you may think it was a waste of time buying one and hardly use it but at the same time there are also a lot of other people who do appreciate it for it's positive aspects and quality games of which there are quite a few with many being exclusive to the Wii.

I have all three consoles and at the moment the Wii is the one I spend the majority of time on. I even have more games on the Wii then I do on the 360 and I've had it for a year less. Infact I'm not at home but I would say I have about 25 games on the Wii of which I have bought 5 in the last 2 months.

The Wii has a lot going for it unfortunately a lot of people think that a console has to have the level of graphics and sound quality that the PS3 and 360 has in order to be good. When it comes to game play and pure fun and entertainment the Wii has it's fair share of great games.

Games like Tiger Woods and Grand Slam Tennis are far better then any golf or tennis games on the PS3 or 350 not because of graphics or sound but because of the added gameplay provided by the MotionPlus attachment. Games like Boom Blox or Boom Blox:Bash Party could never be done on the other consoles. Games like House Of The Dead, Ghost Squad etc. have no competition on the PS3 or 360. I could go on but I won't.

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

Well said Moogle, I would have to totally agree. The Wii is a great console as long as you avoid the rubbish and be select with your games. As mentioned Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart are definites and i would recommend Wii Fit even if just for the balance board, it's a great bit of kit. I haven't got the motion plus yet but apparently the Tiger Woods version on the Wii is the best version by a mile and thats a shot in the eye to all the people who prefer the graphics of the 360 and PS3. Also with the Conduit, we all seeing 3rd party developers starting to push the Wii so hopefully more follow suit and with EA now building games from the ground up for the Wii, others will also follow. So the wii's future is looking healthly IMO

I thought my post was good too lol

well I got The Conduit today and can say that graphically it doesn't let the Wii down, i think High Voltage will be to the Wii what Valve are to PC gaming, they already have 2 more even more impressive games planed for it

The rumor has been going about for some time, and on reading articles I have as RSS feeds I have read more stories about it.

From a quick google I have come across these as the top hits.

WiiHD Revealed: The rumored WiiHD turns out to be true!

News: WiiHD by 2010, PS3 Number Two by 2015, Says Pachter - Kombo.com

You can easy find more from Google if these aren't reliable enough.

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

Soooooo if i got a wii what games should/would i get with it. To be honest the conduit looks quite good and i would enjoy the online play on it. Also madden would be a must but would wait til the 2010 version as well as pro evo 09 and fifa 09. I will be playing the games alone so trying to avoid party games is mario kart 1 of these????

Any good games you suggest that are not party games??? Thanks guys

You already have my answer on that one.

Also to add this is not because of the graphics of the Wii, which to be honest still look very nice at 480p.

It is the gameplay, I just cannot enjoy using the controller.

For example Bully to hit and grab people and such you need to to mixtures of shaking the nunchuck, waving the controller and pressing series of buttons and such.

On the 360 to do all the same its just press one button.

Its just too much hassle to be fun.

You are going to get people that like this so will post defending all this, but I don't.

Cheapest place for a Wii was £100 used at Gamestation (and possibly this is available at Game too).

For that price its definitely worth the punt.

Thumbs up Re: Worth buying a wii?????

Don't underestimate the vast 100%-compatible collection of Gamecube games that can be picked up for about a fiver.
Spend about £15 on a controller and card, and then off you go with "Burnout2", "Star Wars", "Timesplitters", "SSX3", etc. You get to choose from the very best that the Gamecube ever offered - maybe a further 10 games of all genres that you can pick up for the cost of a couple of newer games.

Personally I wouldn't believe in those rumours and I hope no one else does either. I think it would be a shame for someone not to buy a Wii based on rumour and speculation of an HD model. IMHO it may well happen but it's not going to happen any time soon.

sammy657 - one of the best places to look for game advice is metacritic. Aim for games that score 70% or more and you'll generally be ok. Games that I've enjoyed include:
Mario Kart
Endless Ocean
Geometry Wars
Batallion Wars 2
Opoona
Zack and Wiki
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Paper Mario
The Conduit
Wii Music

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

I'm / my family is in the same boat.

We want a Wii, but it's the prospect of a slimmer and / or HD version hanging around that is preventing me from taking the plunge.

I just get the feeling it's been around so long, it can only be a matter of time before the console is updated somehow.

Games-wise, the Mrs would love WiiFit; I love Zelda games so would get the next one, ditto Mario games - but I do wonder truly how much we'd play it....

I think the prospect of a slimmer Wii is definitely on the cards, and soon from all the reports I have read.

Wii 65nm dual-processor upgrade this summer

The HD model will definitely not come out before Christmas.

I agree entirely passive cooled is enticing, and 1GB flash memory - doubling the current 512mb should be handy too.

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

Nintendo's HD console won't be a Wii upgrade, unless they are planing on calling it a Wii 2, it will be on their next gen console, and so far no ones made a move to bring out a next gen till 2012,

they can bring out an updated version of the Wii all they like (360 and PS3 also did over time) but untill they let you transfer over your virtual console games and saves Nintendo can jog on, no existing Wii owner with any sense will upgrade to it.

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

With the Wii there is no reason not to go second hand. They are from what I have read extremely reliable.

You also should get a 12 month warranty with Game on them.

The only console that it is inadvisable to get second hand is the Xbox360.

So really its up to you, but its worth mentioning that the Wii's were a short while back £99 second hand in Gamestation, so if they are now selling for £150 I think that is a bit of a markup.

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

Yeah i remember a few months ago they were 99 quid alright. Hmmmmm if i mentioned this would they do anything? Yeah its a bit more pricey alright even in gamestation they are 149:99. So yeah why did they go back up in price? The only thing im worried about is getting a preowned one and someone has baffed it about and the inside has been messed with

They sold out very fast, so probably thought they could get more money for them.

I highly doubt mentioning they were £99 in the past in terms of price matching would get you anywhere, but you could ask them why they were £99 some weeks back, and then ask them if they have any plans to have them at £99 again.

The console is definitely worth £99, and definitely £150 new, but £180 is a bit much.

If you can hold off until Christmas there is rumor of it dropping price before Christmas.

But also as another idea, if you are prepared to have second hand, have a look on the forum classifieds to see if there are any deals from those people that have grown tired of it (there will be a lot of people in that situation).

Re: Worth buying a wii?????

Yeah im thinking 180 is abit pricey alright considering an xbox 360 is now 140 quid with a few free games. Hmmmm i would get a preowned one in game alright with mario and sonic at the olympics and another game, but bit worried about buying preowned. I know i get a 12 month warrenty, but if it went wrong would they give me another preowned one? Would prefer to buy new if possible what do you think of the 196 deal in hmv???? with grand slam and mario kart. Hmmm what to do thanks mate

To be honest my advice would be if you can wait another month or two, to keep looking on Hotukdeals.

There are deals on the Wii all the time posted there, there was one over the weekend allowing you to get a brand new Wii (and two games) for £147 from Argos.

EXPIRED - Argos console deals 20%off: PS3 80GB+2 games £247, Wii + Wii Fit £190, Wii + 2 games + accessories pack £147, PSP3000 + 1 game £115, DSi +1 game + accessory pack £126, DS Lite £84 - Page 3 - HotUKDeals Forum

Think it was just expired today though so you've probably missed out on that one.

Asda usually have them, and Sainsburys have had two in the last year also.

The Asda and Sainsbury deals you could.

Asda would be your best bet they have had around 5 or 6 separate £150 deals this year alone.

But just to make sure we don't get wires crossed, its not this price there at Asda at the moment.

Another possibility is that if it were a sale online with Argos or such you could go to PC World / and get them to price match with 10% difference ontop.

The idiot behind the till will start to argue its the most local store only but the terms say for immediate home delivery too (DSG staff are told to try and do whatever they can to get out of a pricematch you just have to stand firm).
