Snes Mario Kart

Fired up my Wii for the first time in months last night!!!

After having a conversation about the original Mario Kart on the Snes.....Was really suprised that it wasnt downloadable from the Virtual Console..

Does anyone know if it is going to become available

Cheers
Al

Re: Snes Mario Kart

Crazy isn't it, at 1st people just assumed they were holding it off to coincide with the release of MarioKart Wii, but here we are months after that release and still no SNES MarioKart.

My feelings are that either:

a) They cannot recreate it for VC easily due to the Mode 7 engine used by this (and some other games... Pilot Wings is one that comes to mind). Might sound stupid but apparently it's hard to do... hence why Mario Kart SNES took ages to (possibly didn't ever) get ripped for Emulators.

b) They'll hold back on it until they figure the Wii's on it's way out. As it's pretty much guaranteed to sell well, they may use it as a last cash injection before they release their nexy console.

Hope I'm wrong on both accounts. Was playing it on my mates SNES a few weeks back and it still kicks ass and it's criminal that they don't recreate more of the Ghost Valley tracks on the newer games.

Re: Snes Mario Kart

I'm sure they'll bring it out it's one of the greatest games on the snes, i don't think that Mode 7 is the problem as F-Zero is already out on the virtual console and if memory serves me correctly that used Mode 7.

I've heard that it is possible for the original MK to be played on a Wii by *cough* certain methods *cough* although I can't actually confirm this myself. If this is true then there is no technical reason why it shouldn't be available .. .. .. .. only corporate decisions are keeping it off the VC.

Re: Snes Mario Kart

Yes, I've also "heard" this too (youtube seem to have had a few VC vids of it floating around). Rest assured, it's not because it's technically impossible, it's actually because Nintendo are not releasing it .

I mean, as much as they've been successful this gen with a great console with unique innovations, some of their decisions seem very odd now and then (I would've hoped SMK would've arrived around about MKWii time as well....).

Re: Snes Mario Kart

The SNES battle mode was brilliant, miles better than MK Wii battle mode in my opinion. If they don't ever release this for the virtual console it will be a great pity, although I would be happier still if they released more of the retro tracks for MK Wii. My favourite track was probably rainbow road and trying to lap everyone else on 150 cc

It did get ripped eventually (I used to have it on my old PC!).

Thankfully I still have my SNES and about 50 games for it, with Mario Kart, Mario World and Mario All Stars being the most frequently played games on it. Now, if only I can find myself a cheap enough N64 and a copy of Goldeneye.....

Last time I checked we already have Pilotwings and SSB here. We don't get games at the same time as in the U.S, plus there are differences in the catalogues of VC games for all regions. Finally is states release is on Monday 23/11. In the UK (maybe all of the PAL region) we get our VC releases on Fridays (thought it was Thursdays but have read it's Fridays).

If, however, North America is getting it, then hopefully it's not too far away for us, I think we'll have it by the end of the year, probably over the christmas period.

Most of all I hope I'm wrong and it does get released this week.

Simply cannot wait for this game (aaaaaaahhhhh, no more blue shells ).
Knowing Nintendo we'll get this sometime in 2010 (I hope I'm wrong on that).

It will be great when it is released. My best mate and I used to play this ALL of the time. We had an ongoing tournament against each other and it ran for about 4 years... then had a break... then ran for another 3!

Of course it was assisted by drinking/drinking rules for the finalt 3 years which helped it's longevity.

Great news there! Thanks for the heads up guys!

One of the all time greats.

Now all Nintendo need to do is start releasing these games with online multiplayer adaptions. It's been happening on 360 and PS3 for sometime now, with other games. Something they REALLY need to do to catch up with (and possibly overtake... no pun intended) the other two consoles.

Still good news that it's being released... finally.

MK 64 has been available for a long time. I didn't think much of it the first time round in the time before the N64 was consigned to the loft. I found it a big disappointment compared to SNES MK, but there were some very good tracks. Was it this version that introduced blue shells? I can't remember. I'm hoping that the next Nintendo console allows for additional downloadable content to be bought. How great would it be to be able to get more retro tracks for MK Wii? I would love a Ghost Valley or Rainbow Road series

Has anyone downloaded SMK from the Wii shop yet? If so, how does it play? Is it as good as we all like to remember?

I took the plunge and bought SNES MK at lunchtime, it's rock hard! It plays so differently compared to MK Wii, power slides round corners are different etc... Will take me a while to master this again.
