Just recieved mine from play.asia, and works perfectly. im using it to connect to the internet channel to write this.
Very small, and blinks to let you know its connected. Alot better than the dongle.

Wii Lan Adaptor

Hi Guys:

Wireless is a nightmare in our house so I was thinking of gettin a Wii Lan adaptor so I can connect wired. Seen some on ebay, made by datel but no official ones. Anyone got the datel adaptor (or similar) and does it do the job ??

Cheers,

Steve.

Re: Wii Lan Adaptor

My cousin got the Datel Wii LAN Adapter from Play and he couldn't get it to work as he kept getting an error message,he phoned Nintendo and they couldn't get it working either and neither could his broadband provider so he sent it back.
Hopefully the official Lan Adapter will be out this month.

Cheers peeps will give the datel one a go from play.com. If it does not work I can alway send it back and get a refund. Worth a try though compared to the dodgy wireless connection I am getting at the mo !!

Thanks again.

Wii Lan Adapter - alternative?

Just got a Wii and looking to connect to a homeplug for online connectivity. A bit miffed to find out you have to buy the Lan adapter.

Just a thought - will this work or do you need the Wii version?:

Re: Wii Lan Adapter - alternative?

That's a very good question. I'm planning to get a LAN adaptor in time for Mario Kart(as I don't think wireless is ideal for gaming) and was considering this one at around a tenner delivered.

However, if any LAN adapter would do I might just go for this one at around £4.00 delivered(although it doesn't say USB2), I would think if they all work they should pretty much make the same difference?

Will be interested to see if anyone can put a definitive answer to this question.

Re: Wii Lan Adapter - alternative?

I got one of these a couple of weeks ago and it works flawlessly:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-Ethernet-N...742.m153.l1262

From the same seller and it got her in 4 or 5 days. Without having in-depth knowledge of Wii USB adapter support I would say based on my pc knowledge that due to the various chipsets that they stick in random USB lan adapters, I would not expect any old one to work in a Wii unless their is some sort of foundation code support built in to the adapter chipsets that work generically if you get me.

For the sake of £8-10 to get something that just works, it's worth it imo.

A quick Google confirms what I said, despite being a fairly small range of adapters tested:

Hope this helps you make you mind up .

That sounds a good price for the Datel one(which also includes the net cable IIRC), might do a search for one of those myself.

Re: Wii Lan Adapter - alternative?

I get no extra lag using wireless for gaming, don't see why others would unless they get very low wireless reception. Gaming only uses about 15kps - 20kps maximum anyway...
Recently tried plugging my pc into my router via Ethernet & saw no ping decrease at all.

Re: Wii Lan Adapter - alternative?

response time (ping) is higher on Wireless than on wired for a fact in my experience. If your machine is reporting the same sub 1ms responses on your wireless as you get on your ethernet - switch then something is lieing .

Re: Wii Lan Adapter - alternative?

Is that so? Perhaps I'd best wait and give wireless a trial when Mario Kart releases then as if it works as well as wired then obviously I won't need to bother.

I always thought the general rule was that there is more package loss using wireless for gaming which lead to a bigger chance of lag, perhaps I understood this wrong.

Mind you one negative to wireless is I do get the odd connection drop, usually connects back again immediately but obviously not great when you're in the middle of a game, something that never happens with my wired Xbox360 connection.

Re: Wii Lan Adapter - alternative?

The only thing that really is important is connection strength imo regarding the Wii. Most half decent wireless setups will produce 1-16ms response times in my experience over the years and most games/game servers are designed to compensate for less than ideal connections/intermittant client connection oddities.

Sorry to go on about the 1ms thing on the wireless, it's just that I don't often find that to be the case in my experience, not after an argument . A few ms doesn't really do any harm, unless you are some strange strange strange CS nut .

I only got the lan adapter as I had a spare ethernet point from taking the Xbox out and knowing that for less than £10 I could give the Wii a more bulletproof connection, I said what the hell (Also, Ebay sent me a £7 voucher so it was a no brainer ). I have good wireless strength at home but noticed the difference connecting to wii shop, perfoming updates, all the normal stuff. My wii at least does respond more quickly using the wired lan .
