wiimote & nunchuck controls for Rock Band/Guitar Hero

I've been playing a few rhythm games lately like Drum King and Rock Revolution, which despite getting abysmal reviews are both a lot of fun to play.

The main draw for me is that they use the wii remote and nunchuck to simulate the instruments using motion, instead of needing to buy a whole set of peripherals.

Do either Guitar Hero or Rock Band have similar motion functionality or do you need the proper instruments?

I have played Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock with my Wiimote to show my Dad the game when I didn't have the guitar controller around. Basically the buttons on the Wiimote took the place of the colour buttons on the guitar. It was totally pants and I wouldn't recommend it.

I am not sure about the later releases of Guitar Hero and no idea about Rock Band.
