Just Used Skype 1st Time - What Now

Hi

I have just bought a skype compatible phone for work as we make phone calls to
other countries all the time.

I was under the impression it was free but after seeing a few threads i am not sure.

Thanks.

They have skype as well.

I`m just worried there is a catch somewhere as you don`t get phone calls for free usually

The catch comes later when Skypes owners decide to start to try and extract money from their large base of users, or charge business users for using 'Skype Links' to allow buyers to speak direct to sellers/advertisers on internet advertising. The creators of Skype invented a product they would cash in on by selling later on. Skype is now into phase 2, described above.

Hi,SKYPE PC to PC free(except of course your ISP cost),SKYPEOUT not free ie phoning landlines, mobiles etc UK or International,i use SKYPEOUT in peaktime(on BT options 1 for LL)for normal LL calls has BT 3p/min SKYPEOUT 1.5p/min(after you add the tax ie it is not 1.2p/min).Full list of call charges on website, but when you buy SKYPE Vouchers you get taxed added on ie £5 call time dos'nt cost you £5 its more.

Cheers BOB

Skype have promised that Skype<>Skype calls will always be free, but I suppose they could break the promise. They do seem to have sneaked in a few "enhancements" into the new version that I didn't really want (like a Google search bar) - fortunately you can turn it off.

Ok here goes:

As mentioned above, Skype to Skype at the moment is free. If it remains this way, we will have to see but, i see no reason why it won't. After all, if they charge, we just move to MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger voice.

Now, your orginal question. As touched on above, if you want to call normal phone numbers in another country you will need to buy "SkypeOut" vouchers. These are actually very good value. I use this all the time to call people in the UK (I currently live in Germany) but, when I move to China in around 9 months I will still be paying exactly the same cost as from Germany!

Can I suggest you check out http://www.skype.com/products/skypeout/ and inparticular, look at the world rates page.

You need to check out the page that details costs. Mobiles with the exception of China are all charged at a higher rate, as with all Telco's. China seems to be exempt on this and mobiles come out of the standard global rate, not sure why, maybe its because China is the worlds biggest mobile consumer base or coz Skype has HAD to be very close with the state and therefore, the state run mobile operator?

If you check out the SkypeOut link I pasted in the post above you will see details of the "Global" rate.

Hi,it would have cost you(UK approx)£3.80(20p/min) to call UK to Spain(LL to LL)for 19min.For UK LL to Mobile Spain a lot more,ie it says in BT Booklet 'Calls from BT fixed lines to international mobiles(excluding Uk based roaming mobiles)are charged at 20p per minute above the price for an equivalent International Direct Dialled call to a fixed line',depending on country(Spain seems to apply to this thou).Thats if this applies to the mobile network your mother is on ie might be diff whether she is on a Spanish or UK mobile network?Bet its a lot dearer than what you have payed thou at a guess.

I use skype all the time to call people is OZ and NZ (they are on skype also) and its saved me a packet.

I also call the US and Caribean using skypeout, quality can sometimes be a bit rubbish but again it saves a fair chunk of cash!

SkypeOut's pretty good, been using it for work but some customers I call, the connection goes occasionally - maybe my firewall, I dunno but most other customer's it's fine.
