new to voip, need help tbh

hi guys, can you help me out. Ive just come across this VoiP by downloading VoipCheap, now at the moment i have the free version, which gives me 60 seconds of calles,they says i need to add credit, but im not sure if i will be paying more.

at the moment, im with onetel for £8.99 a month and £10 goes to BT and other calls to mobiles i spend about £25-30 per month on calls with rental, will i make a saving with voip? and can i get some kind of adapter for Voipcheap? so i dont have to use my pc? if so how do these work? can i get a cheapish phone from www.aria.co.uk that will work? - and also will i have a phone number so people can ring me? etc

please help me with my confusion

I don't know about voipcheap, but you should look at a few different providers and see how your type of calls are charged to get an estimate for yourself.
See: Vonage, Sipgate, Gradwell and I'm sure there are more.

All these can be used without a pc and an adapter directly into your broadband router.
See the service providers for recommendations, but the Linksys PAP2 is popular for about £20 locked to Vonage, or £45 ish unlocked. Netgear and Grandstream also do solutions.
If you are prepared to replace your router, there are lots of options with the adapter built in.
If you have a wireless network, Linksys have just launched a portable/mobile phone unit that will connect to the network.
Not sure how much configuration all these solutions need though.

hi,

i use voipcheap - at the moment its free to uk landlines and plenty of other countries too! You have to put £5 credit in the account tho otherwise the calls are cut off after 60s. I have done it and it doesnt seem to be a scam - my £5 is still there after hours and hours of calls.

The downside of it is that the audio quality isnt the best - but it is useable! Also you have to use their softphone - although some people apparently have it working via an ATA.

I also use sipgate - which for no money, you can call other sipgate users and some affiliate SIP providers, you get a free VOIP in number (you can choose the geographical location of as well!) and free voicemail. Call charges seem competetive. Audio quality (for me at least) has always been very good!
