V+ Menu Blurry at 1080i

Does anyone know if the V+ Menus are still blurry at 1080i on 1080 line displays?

Thinking of upgrading my 768 lcd

Hello again JudoJoe,

Yes they are, they're still sharper when you output at 720p.

Does it matter. The menues maybe a little fuzzy, but it is the programmes that matter.

Re: V+ Menu Blurry at 1080i

When connectted to a 1080p display, would you recommend outputing at 1080i all the time.

Or using 720p for upscaled SD and 1080i for HD content?

Do you know if the HD on-demand content is supplied at 720p or 1080i?

That would be my ideal, but I don't think it's possible to set it that way is it? The 1080i menus (including the EPG, BBCi, text, etc) look really nasty - I wish the box could output proper 1080p.

Re: V+ Menu Blurry at 1080i

I have a full HD1080 TV and a V+box connected via HDMI. I tried both 1080i and 720p I could not see any difference in the EPG sharpness - it looks OK to me in both modes. However picture quality on SD and HD via 1080i was better than 720p particularly SD.

Unfortunately no HD TV channels on any service (VM, Sky, Freesat) are 1080p they are all I believe 1080i. Also all HD VOD is 1080i.

The only 1080p sorce that i am aware of is BRD and some games consoles.

The problem is not sharpness per se, it's the interlace effect you see above and/or below sharp graphic items such as text.

Oh I agree, but equally there are no LCD devices that can show 1080i in its true form (they are progressive by nature) so something - either the source device or the TV - has to de-interlace the image for display. Far better to add any menu text, etc. after the image has been made progressive, rather than doing it at an interlaced stage. Also, upscaling SD to 1080 (as I understand it) looks much better if you deinterlace first and then scale to 1080p directly, rather than going back to 1080i before the TV finally converts to 1080p.

The 1080i stuff is fine output at 1080i, it's the upscaled SD material which suffers.

Andre

While i do find that the epg does look "slightly" blurrier @1080i, i do find after exetensive switching between 720p and 1080i that i am now settled with 1080i for my V+ box's output to my sony V3000 40" 1080p lcd.

I just find the picture, particulaly condisering its SD material through the V+ box to look pretty excellent believe it or not in general on my sony @1080i.

Re: V+ Menu Blurry at 1080i

I have a Samsung R87 32" and find no visible difference between 720 and 1080 for SD OR HD content, yet the EPG at 720 is alot sharper, therefore it's a no brainer for me!! I'm guessing that on a full HD tv though, 1080 is the way to go!
