Heard about it from here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%2B

there is an article at:
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitalt...f-of-2008.html

Reading the specs I am totally gutted and dissapointed to see its only 160Gb! Why oh why can't they get it into their thick skulls that 20hrs of HD (yes i know its 80 of SD) is a missed opportunity!

Interesting to see in that digital spy article that they rolled out a firmware upgrade which re-enabled the VCR SCART when using HDMI. I've been wondering about that as reports on the forum have conflicted.

Re: The New V+ box.....

That's not the new V+ - it was Digital Spy speculation.

It's since been confirmed that the new box is from Samsung. Here's the link: http://insidevirgin.blogspot.com/200...2-rumours.html

Re: The New V+ box.....

The Scientific Atlanta box is really starting to look dated, whilst the Samsung STB I have as part of the VIP package looks swish and is very responsive. Looking forward to seeing what a Samsung PVR will look and perform like.

Re: The New V+ box.....

had my old PACE box replaced the other week with the little samsung box and the engineer (nice fella by the way) said the new V+ box was out in the Autumn. Didn't mentioned anything else apart from that.

Re: The New V+ box.....

Does anyone know whether it'll be able to output 576i via HDMI?

I understand this feature has been disabled by the Virgin firmware on the SA box. It'd be a useful feature to have if you want to use an external video processor.

Re: The New V+ box.....

In these days of escallating energy prices I hope it uses kess juice. The nice Virgin man who called the other day to do some work said the old V+ box uses 40W when on and 30W when off (standby).
Pity they can inlude a DVD or Blu ray player in it to save another box under my TV.

Re: The New V+ box.....

My parents are getting V+ installed on the 21st August, does this mean they'll be getting the new box. I told them about a new box that will be an upgrade to the existing box so they rang Virgin, only to be told that there's no truth in it whatsoever, which is a little worrying.

So will they be getting old technology or the new? And if it's old will they be able to upgrade?

The only reason Virgin would change the boxes is if there are going to be any radical changes to the cable technology or if they were going to use a new supplier of boxes to their original specification. As far as we know there are no major changes in view. I agree with the previous comment that a lower power consumption on standby would be an improvement.

Fear not, the current model from Scientific Atlanta works very well and does a great job upscaling SD. It might seem a bit slow at times but I doubt if that can be improved upon.

Re: The New V+ box.....

there is no truth in a new box whatsoever
i install the v+ everyday nearly and they are not gonna bring out a new box when most people dont even have the original
as said the v+ is a great stb and is in no need of an update especially seeing as cost cutting seems to be the way forward these days
we usaully see/hear about new boxes well before with any related tech specs etc and the only thing ive ever seen about a new box is on here !
new 50meg modem now that is nearly here

Re: The New V+ box.....

There IS a new V+ on it's way - manufactured by Samsung and undergoing tests at Virgin. Here's a story from Digital Spy and another from InsideVirgin. I believe Virgin CEO Neil Berkett himself mentioned it at the Q1 results presentation earlier this year.

During your experiences of installing V+ boxes could you let me know:

1) Due to the power usage I often switch the V+ off at the wall at night. Will this harm it?

2) How frequently do people break the rules and swap the HDD out for a bigger one? I obviously wouldn't do it as it's against the rules but it is really that common?

Many thanks
Me.

Due to the box lighting up like a christmas tree in stand by I turn mine off every night and when I go out.

I've had V+ for 2 years and have had the box replaced once but over (approx) the last year it's been turned on/off at the plug constantly with no problems

Re: The New V+ box.....

turning it off at night is absolutely fine
most people do these days and ive hardly seen any v+s fail and have never installed a duff one and ive done alot
as for upgrading ive never come across one as yet ,but as i do mainly new installs or box swaps there is no reason i would
as for the new box i go by what im told not internet speculation or quoted interviews etc
there may well be one in testing but that could be a long way off till they ever released it
