New HD LCD TV - Virgin box - connect?

Really need some help.

Just bought a new Samsung 40" HD LCD LE40A559P4F and Samsung HTZ310R Home cinema.
Have a standard Virgin cable box.
Bought an HDMI cable and optical to connect up the lcd to dvd (using hdmi) and Virgin box to DVD (using optical).

After going through plug and play - tv displaying 'no signal'.
When i connect with scart leads, get a picture and sound, but poor quality.

Am I right in thinking I need a V+ box, which costs an extra £150? And an extra £5 a month?

Can I just use the Old Virgin box or will the picture be rubbish?

We don't even have an aerial so not happy.

Thanks to anyone for any help.

The standard VBox only outputs via SCART, the picture not being very good.
The V+ outputs HDMI and upscales SD up to 720p or 1080i.
The picture is very good on my Panasonic 42" px60.

Re: New HD LCD TV - Virgin box - connect?

Firstly optical carries audio only, you should use this to connect you V box to your home cinema kit for audio. A standard V box (Samsung?)can only be connected to your TV via scart. Ensure that the scart output on your V box is set to RGB (makes a big difference. Does the home cinema system have an input pass through scart that is RGB enabled? If so you may get better results connecting the V box via the home cinema system. This may not be the case as in one instance the TV upscales and in the other route the Home Cinema system upscales and since both are Samsung the upscaling is probably identical.

A V+box does not cost £150 This is just one way of getting a V+box. This payment is a single up front one off rental charge. Alternatively you can pay a £30 install fee and a monthly rental.

Edit
Just seen WGlovers post and agree SD via V+ and HDMI at 1080i is excellent. (Panasonic 37LZD85) I also have a standard V box and picture via RGB scart whilst not as good is as good as any other non upscaled input.
