Is it possible to buy a standalone wireless cable modem so that I only have to have one box plugged in?

This is a good question, and I too would be interested in finding out if there is a wireless router solution for Virgin cable.

As far as I know there isn't one for the virgin cable service, as their modem communicates with the server/routers at their end. When you set up your account, I recall having to establish a connection, I think by sending them the MAC address or something similar. I think the modem is proprietary to Virgin cable.

I dont think you can do this. It would be nice if VM made one themselves as i too hate having 2 boxes.
What i did was just hide the VM one away. I realise this doesnt really answer you question!

Virgin Media do make a wireless modem router you have to call them up and order it from them, its not cheap tho!

phone 151 and ask them. I would ask the question If I get wireless router/modem can I use it on the network if I give you the mac address of the modem.

When my modem broke they sent me a new one but it wouldnt work so I called them up they asked for the mac number on the bottom and with in 30secs it was up and running.

there isnt a one box solution as said above
new customers on certain packages are offered a wireless router for free (netgear but with virgin branding)
its always worth a punt to see if they will send you one for free but as said it wont be a one box solution
