Actually you cannot buy one legally or illegally because they remain the property of Virgin Media. If you see one for sale-its nicked ! The fee you are charged by Virgin to set you up is an installation fee you don't own the box as some Sky customers do. This is a charge for fitting the unit and the engineer making the link-up to the system. They only work with the Virgin Cable system and use a card to do so. I say that because people have previously queried if they can pick up Freeview. Absolutely no chance. They do sell a normal Freeview box as phantom73 has pointed out. This works with an aerial not the cable.
Virgin are not always able, apparently, to pick up every redundant box so this is how they appear for sale on the Web. Virgin can identify unregistered users. If you are caught trying to link up illegally you are committing an offence and the court can fine you and retrieve the box and possibly your telly. Not worth taking a chance on that one.
