Looking to upgrade to v+ and wondered if the sony htsf1300 AIO would output 5.1 audio over hdmi (when broadcast) as there is no optical input on the receiver.

The HTSF1300 is supposed to have 2 optical inputs according to its spec on the Sony website, unless you mean you have no optical inputs spare:

In answer to your question, the V+ will not output 5.1 through HDMI.

NB - The only channel on Virgin Media that seems to broadcast 5.1 is BBCHD.

Thanks for clearing that up - I didn't think the v+ box could be connected to the "TV optical-in" connection on the sony, so relied on a hdmi connection only.

Presumably you connect the two boxes with a hdmi cable for video and an optical cable for audio if you want 5.1 from the BBCHD channel?

Yep, that's right...

HDMI from the V+ direct to the TV (or to the amp if you're doing passthrough) for video. Then use optical from the V+ to the amp for audio.

Remember to turn on "HDMI audio overide" in the V+ settings.
