I'm on NTL and have been dying to really get the best out of my 40" HD Sony Bravia... it's not something you're going to be able to do watching TV for a few months yet. I was told by a marketing person that a PVR based on the Telewest TVdrive would be out late this year...
That asside if you want to make the most of your set now you have 3 options...1) a better scart cable 2) Switch to sky 3) Accept poor TV for a bit, but boost your old DVD collection
1) Better scart = better picture... well maybe, im not convinced that I can see the difference between a £30 scart and £80 scart cable. As such I took the latter back. Argos lets you return any cable you buy, and if you want to purchase a monster cable you can return them at any store you bought it from.
2) unhelpful advice im sure so lets ignore it
3) Finally, I'll tell you how I actually really got to enjoy my new TV, and what makes the wait for NTL HD seem both worth while and so gaulling at the same time: I bought an upscaling DVD player with DVI->HDMI output.
I bought the OPPO, which for <£200 really impressed me with its picture quality on my 40" screen. It upscales DVDs up to 1080i (for me 720p works best) and whilst the material is not as good as true HD, it's a massive step up from standard definition DVD content over any scart cable. I'd really recomend you get yourself a DVD player capable of offering "Enhanced Definition" via DVI/HDMI, and i think value for money the OPPO is fantastic.... Scenes from Lord of the Rings look truelly breath taking on my Sony, i'm sure they would on yours. If you have a biggish collection of DVD's this is a real must.
Hope that's given you food for thought
Best of luck with your whole set up....
