It's nothing to do with resolution, it's down to aspect ratios.
Mainstream channels are now mainly widescreen (16:9) which is the same shape as your screen. A lot of channels which show older programming use non widescreen (4:3) so this will leave a gap at the side.

Some people have suggested an option to stretch the image to fill the screen but this will result in very fat people!

Zooming in doesn't really work as you would lose a lot of the image from the top and bottom (including most captions).

You might want to check your screen's aspect ratio options, some sets even let you set the side bars to grey rather than black if black offends you

regards

Brian

5 % isn't in widescreen - how is that disappointing ??

Most the modern stuff on BBC and ITV is in wide. if you want to test your settings, BBC News 24 is always in wide and UKTV Gold & Living TV is always in 4:3 (in my experience).

I previously used to watch a slightly zoomed version of 4:3, loosing a little top and bottom (without stretching), but having had the TVD since march i'm now totally used to seeing 4:3 as 4:3 and i dont think i would go back.

Most of the main channels should be in widescreen. Are you trying to watch old episodes of 'Open all hours' in widescreen?

Getting my tvdrive next week!

Ah I see, I never usually get that far up the channels, there are only so many episodes of Friends and The Bill a man can watch!

Yeah my TVDrive will be via HDMI, i've seen 'Pride' on a Sony and it looked awesome.
