Loud TVDrive??

Hey all,

I am on my second TVDrive box now. The first one was consistently freezing and then rebooting.

However, my second box seems fine except for one annoying point. It is noisy.

It is quite loud when recording which I can accept as it is the hard drive working away but more annoyingly, when watching any channel it makes a ticking noise. It is like the hard disk is being worked on every 1 second. It comes and goes and doesn't seem dependant on any channel or time of day.

It also seems to make more of a humming sound at different times - almost like there is a loose component that is rattling at a really high frequency. This dissapears if you pick up the box so that it doesn't touch anything. I have tried dampening the box with foam between the box and platform but with no real success.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems. I was told by the technician that I should expect to put up with a box that makes some noise but I think the noise mine is making is not really that acceptable.

Has anyone else out there been experiencing similar problems.

Please let me know because I am starting to think that I am being too picky.

Cheers all.

Yes my Telewest box does exactly the same. The engineer who installed said that this is "normal". To lessen the humming noise, try placing it on a rubber mouse mat (or two) to act as a dampener. Maybe one day old TW will develop a silent box?

My TVDrive is far quieter than my old Samsung DVD recorder (and its fan!!).

Presently the TV Drive is on top of my Sony DVD recorder... cant hear it at all.

Mine makes virtually no noise at all, right now I'm viewing one channel and recording another - the only sound can be heard up close and its the same you'd get from an audio cassette playing (remember those!)

I bet some boxes make less noise than others. I am going to chance it by getting out an egineer to replace the box. I claim that i've got a mate who's box make less noise and see how it goes. I post the result.

Cheers guys for the replies.

When i'm watching TV its fine, i hear nothing.

But when i turn it off and go to sleep (tvdrive is in my room) it is really loud, especially when its recording.
Also it seems to turn on and off with a rather loud "beep" sound.

But my main concern is the heat, does anyone elses box get really really really hot?
