The last predicted date for their HD PVR was Q3 this year but plans may have changed due to the merger.

According to Scientific Atlanta's press release it should be sometime this year using the Explorer 8450DVB set top box.

I can't honestly see one going H264 and the other MPEG2 when they are essentially the same company now. That press release dates back to October 2005 when NTL were still making plans independant of TW so I can't see it as being accurate now.

On what do you base that statement?

Separate yes, but NTL 'must' have made some sort of commitment to SA. The fact that NTL & TW merged afterwards wouldn't invalidiate that commitment.

Personally, I see the SA8450 being rolled out at the end of this year to NTL customers. As for TW customers, who knows?

Perhaps the 8450 will replace the TV Drive as the PVR of choice.

We can but wait (and indulge in more idle speculation without information)!

"Idle speculation without information"?
I'm reasonably well informed. Are you?

Sorry, wasn't 'flaming', () just making the general point that until something official comes out, one way or the other, we're all pretty much in the dark.

I haven't seen (here or on other forums that I keep an eye on) hide nor hair of the 'word'.

My only reason, and I'll admit it's probably wishful thinking, for 'supporting' the 8450 is that if NTL were going to use the TV Drive then they would have flogged it to the NTL clients by now...or would they?

NTL have some catching up to do on their infrastructure. Once completed and sucessfully trialled they will roll out to the chosen solution to their customers.
And I never considered your comments flaming. I thought your tone suggested inside information. I prefer to call my comments 'educated guesswork'!

For peoples info

I emailed NTL regarding HDTV, and recived this response.

Hi

Thank you for your recent e-mail.

We are currently trialling a new set top box which will support HDTV

This box will also have a built in hard disc drive and three tuners so you can watch one programme and record up to two others.

It will be available later this year

Regards

That description fits both the TVDrive set top and the proposed set top linked to above. However they work differently and the debate is regarding their intention to continue on the path they originally decided on or go with Telewests older but working solution. My guess is TW because it can be rolled out faster as long as their network does not differ from TWs' by too much.

Yes, I understood that.

I was more interested in the point that they said that it will be out later this year, as most other previous reports had been early 2007.
