Question NTL Modem Direct Connection - MTU Failed!

Afternoon folks,

did a search but I couldn't find an answer to this so here goes...

my mate just got his NTL modem installed, so far all he's done is connect it directly to his Xbox 360 - when trying to connect to Xbox Live he gets an "MTU Failed" error. So far he's reset the Xbox network settings and turned to modem on/off. The modem has NOT been connected to a PC yet as his PC is poorly, has anyone got any idea why the MTU test is failing???

any help would be much appreciated

Yep, seen it before. Its a fault with NTL, nothing to do with your set-up. Most of the time it just "goes away"

Yeah get him to give them a ring. Its nothing he can do personally tho... you cannot change any settings in the modem, its in their network. I've seen it happen all day for some users, then next day its sorted.

Get on the blower to em and give em what for

If he's just had it installed then maybe it's because it has'nt been registered on the network yet!

Usually takes a few hours.

hiya

i had a similar problem with telewest which i traced down to the mtu when live first came out years ago

what it turned out to be was a routing problem with the 82 range they had assigned me. u could try leaving the modem off for a few hours and switchin it on againt o hopefull get a new ip or quite often the cable company realises the prob and sorts it.

mgk

Re: NTL Modem Direct Connection - MTU Failed!

My brother has just tried to do this connection and he's also getting the same message.

NTL say they dont support Xbox Live He called them and they said he would have to go elsewhere

Are there any workarounds?

The modem's connectivty will be restricted until it has been registered using your pin number, either using NTL's disc or by going to autoreg.autoregister.net. Although once it has been registered it may still have issues with passing the MTU test Don't know any workarounds, sorry.

Thanks for the info. I'll ask him to register tomorrow. What a shame NTL are'nt allowing sufficient MTU through there STB.....

Re: NTL Modem Direct Connection - MTU Failed!

Hi,

The easiest way to use the NTL cable modem with a Xbox 360 that I have found, was to use a cheap wired router (a LinkSys in my case) and register with NTL (via the router) using a PC, then connect the 360 via the router – this has worked without a hitch – with the added bonus that I have a basic NAT firewall in place too now

Re: NTL Modem Direct Connection - MTU Failed!

Exactly what I did when my son wanted Xbox live. ISTR it's a Linksys BEFSR41. Just cloned the Router address so that the WAN port appeared to NTL to be the same device as his previously directly connected PC network card.

Re: NTL Modem Direct Connection - MTU Failed!

For folks without a router, does spoofing the (registered) PC's MAC address work (go to Network Settings in the Xbox 360 dash and enter the PC's MAC address)?

Re: NTL Modem Direct Connection - MTU Failed!

Cloning the MAC address should work in theory as long as you don't have the normally connected PC network card online at the same time.
