Question TeleWest HD TV Drive - Copying recordings to a pc

Hi, I have a TV Drive and want to connect it to my network so that I can view my recordings through my Snazio 1350 Net DVD player and also to be able to copy my recordings onto my pc hard disk for burning to DVD.

TeleWest haven't given me any manuals. They promise that I shouuld receive a manuual and HDMI cable in the post in the "next 14 days". However, they also promised that the cable would be supplied when installing the box and then said that a man would drop one through the letterbox 3 days later, both of which were unture so I'm not holding my breath!

I've connected the ethernet port on the back of the TV Drive to my router but I can find no information on how to obtain or set the IP address and there doesn't appear to be anything on the settings screens related to this.

Has anyone else managed to copy recordings to their pc yet? If so, how?

You wont be able to, it'll all be encrypted. Could maybe be hacked but I havent been able to find out any info about doing this.

But what is the point of the ethernet connection in the back of the tv drive? It is designed to connec to pc or networks.

Not for copying stuff though, probably as a potential media streaming update at some point

I don't agree. The majority of my recordings will be from free to air channels so there is no reason for the recordings to be encrypted.

That's what I thought. Two TeleWest engineers told me that I should be able to use the ethernet to connect to a pc though neither had ever tried it.

If I ever get a manual from TeleWest I'll have a look but I doubt there will be any instructions.

I don't think the results would be very good at all.

Perhaps the easiest option will be to just open up the box, remove the hard disk and plug it direct into the pc? Hopefully it'll be in a format that windows can read.

I have plugged my box in, it was doing something. constant actitivity on the router but I couldnt ping or connect to it.

I read up on a big US forum about these boxes, couldnt find a single thing about LAN and it appears that when you plug a external HDD into it and record movies onto the that drive, it doesnt allow you to view that hdd in windows and even doesnt work if you plug it into another identical box (asks you to format).

That souunds a bit disappointing.

I read somewhere (a few months ago) that TeleWest were looking to use a new box from Scientific Atlanta with a built in DVD recorder. Perhaps they are just locking everyone into paying even more to upgrade to a better box next year?
