Telewest Connections

Does anyone know what type of connections are on the telewest HD box.
Is it component or HDMI?

Also does anyone know if its possible to have 2 boxes, at the moment I run 2 SKY+ boxes

Thanks for that,
Do you know how much it costs to have 2 boxes and what the service is like,
also my second room uses s-video, it makes it easier for the amp to switch, does it have an s-video output?
I'm thinking of changing from SKY

For info, when looking at a friends box the other day, whilst he had it connected via both HDMI & Component, it was only possible to view HD movies (well the one that was on there) from the teleport service if you set output to HDMI.

I guess that will the case for all HD stuff when it comes to movies....

Not an HD issue (so maybe a little OT) but is there a specific reason you're looking to switch from Sky to Telewest? The reason I ask is that I'm actually thinking of doing the opposite - fed up with the frequent digital artefacts on video and sound drop-outs on Telewest - and I was assuming Sky would be better?

Cheers,

Al

Now I;m really confused!!

I have just invested in a Pioneer HD plasma and now in the middle of buying speakers etc as I've started from scratch!! I don't have Sky or Cable but started looking into which is better last week. Originally I was going to just go with sky but then I saw the price! Cable is avalible in my area and fortunatly my company pay for my home phone and internet which is currently through BT.
The point is for the same money I could get the top ntl package including the top channel package for the some money = my company pay for my telly channels!!
Is there anything I should be aware of?? the cable deal seems too good! no £300 HD box to buy, no monthly £10 charge for the honnor. how can they do this??? (I've never used this forum before so any advise would be great

Get Telewest to send an engineer to turn up the gain to your box.
Access is via the green box somewhere in your street.
It may help.

Cheers MERC, I've already suggested a few times that they might want to check the bandwidth on the line (at which point they normally ask me which broadband package I'm on and why I'm talking to the TV team and not the internet team - doh!) but always claim its okay once they realise I'm on about the TV performance. Maybe a call to cancel the service might get the response I need...!

andoo, welcome to the forum! "Value for money" is always a difficult thing to judge, since we all make different judgements as to the value of something. If choice per pound is your main driver, or the avoidance of an external dish, then I suspect you'll not go far wrong with cable. The problem I have is that I've seen much better picture quality on other people's Sky systems than I get on cable - much more difficult to quantify!

One thing I would say though is be careful that you compare like for like. You mention a monthly £10 charge for the honour, and I'm not sure if this in reference to HD services or PVR functionality (Sky+). I can't comment on ntl (who I didn't even know had launched an HD service?) but for Telewest the TVDrive service IS charged as an extra (£10 or £15 per month depending on which package you select), although this covers both the PVR and HD functions. Availability of HD is restricted as well, and given the difficulty I'm getting with SD bandwidth programmes I'd hate to think what HD would look like Remember that cable and Sky also use different HD compression systems (MPEG2 for cable, MPEG4 for Sky as I recall) although whether this has any impact on quality I have no idea. Sorry to confuse you further!
