Question Virgin Media in two rooms! HELP!

Hi,
I know this question has been asked many times, but I can't find an identical situation to mine, so hope that someone can help me out as I am despairing!

I have V+ HD connected to the main TV in the lounge via HDMi cable to my plasma tv. I have paid a builder to run a cable out of the house, up the outside and back into the bedroom upstairs, where I would like to be able to watch virgin media on the TV there. No problem that it is the same channel as in the lounge as only the Mrs and I there.
Can not, can not get it to work at all !! And it's so frustrating!

I am running a co-ax cable from the 'to TV' female co-ax port on the back of the virgin media V+ HD box, the other TV is connected at the other end with the male co-ax end. I have tried re-tuning the TV but find no signal.

Other complications, I have bought a sky type magic eye that I wish to use in the bedroom to change the channel on the box downstairs. Even without this plugged in the signal still does not come through to the TV in the bedroom. I have also tried taking the bedroom TV downstairs into the lounge and using a shorter length of co-ax to connect directly to it, still nothing?

Does the V+ HD box have to be de-coded in any way, or anything else used that I should know about?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Chris

Re: Virgin Media in two rooms! HELP!

As far as I know the only other output you can use when HDMI lead is connected is the "To VCR" SCART socket as all the others are automatically disabled.

Re: Virgin Media in two rooms! HELP!

Ok thanks. In your opinion, how can I resolve the problem? Have disconnected hdmi and can now see DVDs on the other tv but not yet virgin tv! Aaahhhh! Frustrating how complex it can be....
Thanks again

Re: Virgin Media in two rooms! HELP!

Virtually every week we get the same query on here - please use search

However as has been said if the V+ is in HDMI mode then the RF out is disabled. But the VCR scart socket is still active. I have connected an old small VCR to this scart output and then use this as an RF modulator to distribute the V+ output round the house. Alternatively you can get an RF modulator from the likes of Maplin.

Please also be aware that although a remote link will work you will not see any epg or menus in the bedroom unless the V+ is one of the later Samsung ones.

Re: Virgin Media in two rooms! HELP!

Hi. Thanks.
Could you please explain further. The v+ HD box has the following:

cable in (as it sounds), antenna (empty), to tv (I assume where the co-ax out to 2nd tv should be), audio out (red and white - both empty), HDTV (y, pb and pt - all empty, tv scart (to tv to support hdmi cable), VCR scart (to my 5.1 panasonic home cinema system/DVD player), hdmi (to main tv), optical audio out, USB, ethernet, eSata and IR remote out (all empty).
I have the scart in to DVD player and then hdmi cable running to the tv. I have tried using the co-ax cable out of the port on the back of the dvd player to the second tv, also with no success...

Is there a solution to this? Thanks

Firstly forget the V+ coax out it does not work with HDMI on. Also remove the cable from the V+ TV scart to the TV it also does nothing if HDMI is on. Modern DVD recorders etc. also do not modulate RF only pass it through. I have the VCR scart connected to my DVD recorder and the HDMI from that to the TV but I then have the TV scart on the DVDR connected to the old small VCR. With the VCR set to Scart in I then get the output of the V+ VCR scart modulated on the VCR output channel via the coax out and sent round the house.

Re: Virgin Media in two rooms! HELP!

Fantastic - thank you for your input.

Could you please explain in lehmans terms (I am not very technically minded) what I need to do / purchase in order to get the V+ out and round the house via co-ax.

On the back of the DVD player there is only one scart port, which is how I have it connected to the V+ box as it also acts as a sound system. The HDMi lead from the DVD player to TV is to watch DVDs in higher quality and improve the sound. The HDMi lead from V+ box to TV is to watch TV in HD (is this cable needed, or can I run scart to DVD player then HDMi lead from DVD player to TV?).

Finally, when you say you have VCR scart modulated on the VCR output channel?!?!? what does this mean? Can I not use the co-ax out from the DVD player to go round the house instead of introducing a VCR?

Thanks again, feel like I'm getting close to resolving this problem, but not quite there yet!!

You basically need one of these:
ILS102 RF MODULATOR | ALLOWS SCART INTO COAX SOCKET: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

You attach the VCR SCART output of the V+ box to it and coax from it to your RF input of a second TV or distribution block.

You may also be interested in this if you want to control your V+ box while located in the second location:

Please be aware that the OP has a Panasonic Home Cinema inc DVD player system in the middle of this. How should he connect that? (I am not very familiar with connecting integrated home cinema systems as I use my hi-Fi )

He'd still have optical out from the V+ box if his home cinema system has an optical input? The modulator also has SCART passthrough as well as coax output so he'd just connect a SCART lead from the modulator to the home cinema DVD.

I don't believe the situation is any less amenable if using the modulator. What has he lost?

He'd need to supply me with more details regarding his home cinema set up in order for me to advise on the best way to connect it up.

Re: Virgin Media in two rooms! HELP!

Hi
the DVD/cinema system is a panasonic 5.1 (model no. Sa pt460). Basically at the back there is the sound out to the speakers, a red and White aux plug (currently connected to my wii for surround sound quality), fm antanea (female co-ax port - empty), av out (hdmi cable to tv), optical in (empty), an one av scart port (currently from v+ box to feed the sound into speaker system. Does that help somewhat?

Thankyou ever so much, feel like we're about to crack it!

Cheers

Re: Virgin Media in two rooms! HELP!

Ok, couple of other pointers. Have tried a scart directly from the v+ box to the 2nd tv whilst the 1st is running on hdmi cable. Have tried the scart connection to 2nd tv in both the tv an VCR ports - neither work. Am I right in thinking I need to connect an rf modulator between the v+ box from the tv scart out port and then a co-ax to the 2nd tv?

Thanks

Maybe the SCART lead is at fault?

Yes, you'd connect the VCR SCART output to the RF modulator and coax from the modulator to the second TV. You can also attach a second SCART to the modulator and then connect that to your DVD at the same time.

You could use the optical audio out of the V+ box to the sound system's optical audio input. This would allow you to access DolbyDigital 5.1 audio when present in HD broadcasts. You'd also need to switch HDMI audio override to ON in the V+ box's settings in order to get the 5.1 audio via the optical connection. The SCART connection from the V+ only carries analogue stereo audio so no Dolby Digital via the SCART, only via HDMI or optical.

However the direct scart from V+ VCR scart to second TV scart in should work and this should be working correctly before this is replaced with an RF modulator.

Re: Virgin Media in two rooms! HELP!

Hi
Does anyone know if the Scientific Atlanta V+ box's vcr scart out should be working when I am using HDMI out to TV, as I am trying to get the same feed to another TV I have tried a HDMI splitter ( 1 to 2) and when I put 2 cables into the splitter I got a blue screen so now trying an RF Modulator from V+ box (vcr scart out) but cant get a picture on 2nd TV when I scan an unused channel.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Ian

As was said in my post above yours yes it does normally work. First try a scart from the VCR scart to another TV. This should work , if it doesn't then there is something wrong and there is no use playing around with RF modulators or videosenders or whatever.

I am surprised the HDMI spliter does not work however. These devices are less common than the HDMI switched combiner that can be used with older TV's having one HDMI. Are you sure that you are not using one of these? The "combiner" does not work in reverse.

sorry lads, just to clarify....

If I'm running HDMI from my V+ box would I still be able to use a scart video sender such as :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Marmitek-Pow...ef=pd_sim_ce_2

to send a signal to my lads bedroom?

THe item you've posted a link to isn't a signal sender, its a wireless infra red remote extender. It allows you to control your TV, VCR, cable box or audio installation from anywhere in the house using your existing remote controls.

You need an AV sender, preferably one with 5.8GHz signal strength:
Amazon.co.uk: video sender - Electronics & Photo

You'd connect the transmitter part to the cable box's VCR SCART output and the receiver to the TV you wish to send the signal to. You can do this while still using the HDMI output from the V+ box. It should be noted that you will not have independent output to both the main and second TV. The output to the second TV will be the same as that being output to the main TV or the main TV can be using the internal tuner(s) while outputting recorded material via the VCR SCART.

Hi Boostrail
I have now tried the direct scart to another TV and you were right it works, now my next question is would I loose any picture quality over a 10 mtr scart lead as I cant seem to get the modulator I bought to tune in on second TV so a scart would do it.
Cheers Ian

Cheers Ian
Regret I have no experience of such a long Scart cable.

I am surprised the modulator does not work. What channel is it set to for output? Is it set to or specified as PAL I? (notB/G). I hope you are using the analogue tuner on your second TV not the digital tuner?

I assume yor main TV has an analogue tuner. Have you tried looking for the output of the modulator on this ( by putting a short RF cable from the modulator to the RF in
on your main TV.

What make/model is the RF modulator - post link if possible.

Many Thanks for your help

Sound only seems to indicate a system problem (e.g. PAL B/G versus PAL I) - although picture with no sound is more usual in this system clash.

Hi All
I can now confirm that a 10m Scart looses no quality on second TV.
Very Happy

Hi,
I started this thread and am still having problems.
I have purchased a RF modulator as advised and still can't seem to get it all to work. Will try to summarise what's going on:
Connect the RF mod via a scart out of the V+ box from the VCR scart out port. Then run a co-ax cable to the second TV - can see a rough outline of the picture when tune in, but can't get it at all really. Have also tried a scart out of the RF mod to the second TV with no reception at all. Equally, taking the RF mod out of the equation, when I run a scart from the VCR scart out port from the V+ box to the second TV I get nothing, but that does work when I run it to the main TV. What is going on?!?!

All I want to do is to get a second output from the V+ box, and with an HDMI cable, apparantly the only way to do so is with scart out, which I need to convert to co-ax to run round the house.

Is there an issue with my V+ box, or with my second TV?
By the way, co-ax cable in to the second TV works from a stand alone ariel.

Thanks for any help...

Chris

Connecting the V+VCR scart direct to the another TV has to work, this has to be established to be working before an RF modulator can be set up. Are you sure that you are choosing the right input on on the second TV some (especially CRT portables) are a bit obscure as to how to select the scart and AV inputs.

What model RF modulator did you get. What system and channel is it set to output on. What settings does it have on it?

Hi,

This is the RF modulator I have bought:
ILS102 RF MODULATOR | ALLOWS SCART INTO COAX SOCKET: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

wasn't aware that using different channels made any difference, what should it be set to?

Thanks
Chris
