Virgin TV cable to modem?

Hope someone can advise, please!

My scenario is:

Cable TV line in to V+ box living room
Broadband line to modem to wireless router in upstairs bedroom

What I'd like to do:

Could Virgin split the TV cable into 2 - one still going into V+ and the other into another modem, so that I could connect a PC or PS3 in the living room.

Or am I making this more complicated than I need to?? Would it be simpler to ask Virgin to move the upstairs broadband line to the downstairs living room?

I would still like to retain the wireless router, so it can be upstairs or downstairs.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

So i think that you are asking "can VM supply two wired BB modems ?"

I dont the answer to that, but if the answer is no, then you have 3 options as i see it:

Move the modem to the living room (as you suggest).

Buy a device that transmits the BB through your house via the mains electricty circuit. I think these are about 80 quid for 2 - you connect one in the wall next to the modem and one in the living room next to your gear.

Buy long cat 5 cables to connect your living room gear to the upstairs modem as and when you need it (this i what i occasionally do with the apple TV if i have a lot of data to transfer).

Hope that helps

Re: Virgin TV cable to modem?

barmindy this is fairly standard practice. With my installation (done by VirginM) the cable is split, one way going into the V+ box and the other going to the modem which I have connected to my own router adjacent to the TV. A cable comes out of this to connect to my Bluray, for what its worth.

Surely the wireless router, wherever it is, will connect wirelessly to the computer and the PS3 anywhere in the house? Don't really see why you need another modem.

Indeed, all you need to do is connect the existing modem to a wireless router. The signal can then be distributed throughout your home wirelessly and only the one modem is required.

Exactly, so why would he need a second modem?

Re: Virgin TV cable to modem?

I'm assuming that there is a need for a wired connection for the living room pc and PS3.

Re: Virgin TV cable to modem?

Thank you all for your very helpful responses - and queries!

I would prefer a wired internet connection in the living room - ie the main connection. At the moment, wireless quality is ok and my main PC is in the upstairs room. However, I may soon move the PC into the living room and would prefer a wired connection in the living room.

I considered leaving the existing wired connection upstairs and having a second one downstairs, but I know that probably doesn't make much sense.

I've heard the "wired through the mains" connections are much better than they used to be, so may go down that route.

Thanks again all!

You basically need a router then and not a wireless one. You can then set up a wired LAN in your home. The difference would be that ethernet cabling would have to be laid down from the router to each node or computer on the network. The cable modem is also attached to either the router or to at least one of the computers on the LAN.

The IT fella in our office has this in his own house on the basis that it is a much more stable connection than wireless, so i'm guessing that they are ok now.

Re: Virgin TV cable to modem?

Bamindy,

Another option would be to install a wireless Bridge/AP in your lounge where you want the LAN connection. This would take your flakey Wireless signal and provide you with physical LAN connection(s) which you could then plug your PS3 etc into....

Just an option.
