Re: v+ picture. please help

Defo domething wrong. I and many others on here reckon the SD from a V+ box via HDMI is incredible and streets in front of SD on a Sky+HD box.

What settings are you using? What spec is your TV?

Re: v+ picture. please help

Hi

Unfortunately not familiar with the new Samsung V+. There is a bit of a disagreement on here as to whether it is as good as the older Scientific Atlanta V+ for SD - some say its as good but some say its poor.

However some things to try.

You say you are using 1080, is your plasma a full 1080 panel or just able to accept a 1080i signal ? I ask as many plasmas are not full 1080 panels and they are better run at 720p

Also are you using the "wide" setting if so try selecting the straight 1080i or 720p setting. With the wide setting on any material that is not 16:9 is stretched and squeezed to fit 16:9. With it off all widescreen material is still displayed in full widescreen but other non widescreen material is diplayed in its native aspect ratio. I find that my TV makes a better job of expanding pictures if I want them expanded than the V+ "wide" setting.

Have a look to your settings for the HDMI input on your TV and in particular ensure all detail enhancements are set to off and sharpnes is set to low.

The big mystery is the grey blodges in the black areas....?

I have had V+ box with Toshiba 46ZF355 tv and the SD picture on some channels is really really good; it was a big difference going from normal VM box with an RGB Scart connection to HDMI and V+ Box.

Howver my dad has the same setup but with a Philips 47" and the SD picture is noticeably jagged, kind of pixelated (not the usual SD "noise") but as though there is some kind of conflict/scaling problem; SD content looks better VIA SCART on this TV as it has a natural softer look to it so doesn't create jagged lines. Close ups are fine with it but normal views of peoples faces exhibits a lot of noise and noticeable jagged lines (eg shirt collars etc). HD channels are brilliant though, just SD nowhere near as good as the Toshiba. This is with both unscaled (exact scan on the Toshiba) so it's strange why there is a visible digital effect on the Philips in terms of jagged lines/pixelation.

I had exactly the same problem - see my post.
My conclusion is that V+ box and our TVs are not a greta combination for SD TV - the upscalation is not good.
Only way I found to fix it: reduce sharpness, and things like dynamic contrast in your TV picture settings, activate options like "pixel noise reduction", etc..all these make SD piture looks smooth.

You may find that some broadcasts will be worse than others. When my gf was making me watch the X-Factor, that was always particularly bad. But there are other examples of SD braodcasts that are excellent.
