But hopefully a few months of no traffic shaping at the very least..... It is bliss!

The wireless router is going to come in the post at some point they told me within the next few weeks.

The speeds are really good though. But I am a bit dissapointed with newsgroup speeds, they are very hit and miss -- I think they must traffic shape newsgroup activity through ports or something right?
My 20MB line maxes out with Giganews, I would imagine that very few places on the web are set up to handle a 50MB connection.

Re: Virgin Media - 50MB - New Modem

Hi,

I am on giganews, so I expect full speeds.

I am almost certain they were traffic shaping it or something at certain times.... but not to worried getting full speeds!

Re: Virgin Media - 50MB - New Modem

So if your 20m line maxed out then what speeds are you getting now?

I'm on Newshosting and that maxes out my 20m, I should have the 50m soon and am hoping for at least 30-40m, although tbh anything that will give me more than the current 4.5m that VM cap me at will be most welcome.

Re: Virgin Media - 50MB - New Modem

I am maxing out the 50mb connection and getting pretty much full download speeds when I use all 20 connections to giganews. Less if I use less than the 20 connections though.

Re: Virgin Media - 50MB - New Modem

I received another email to say my trial will be installed on 21st January with the new modem and NO CHARGES! Now, if they would only give me the free wireless 'N' router!

Re: Virgin Media - 50MB - New Modem

carvegio,

Can you test from the Maidenhead Server (Speedtest.net) as I find the results from the London Server a bit hit and miss

This is my results (20Mb) via the Maidenhead Server.

bendanuk,

How come your getting it for free (I presume just the install is free), did Virgin Media cancel a previous install?

Re: Virgin Media - 50MB - New Modem

From maidenhead, still getting similar results from London -- not keen on speed tests, but downloading from newsgroups gives me good constant high speeds 5.7/5.8 mb/s from giganews.

Still no router, they said it was in the post grrr.

Re: Virgin Media - 50MB - New Modem

Mine was installed yesterday but I don't get the free router but I do get to keep the modem after the trial has finished. I haven't really downloaded anything yet but I did notice while 2 laptops, xbox 360 and a NAS were connected there was NO issue, where previously on the 20MB it would be so s...l..o...w.....

Re: Virgin Media - 50MB - New Modem

Funny thing is that most people who upgrade to the 50mb will still be using their old 54g routers which max out at 3MB/s, so they won't benefit from the 6MB/s download unless using a wired connection or 5GHZ Wireless N which allows 6-7MB/s over wireless, anyone know what the upload speed is for the 50mb?

I'm on 5GHZ N using a Apple Time Capsule, and an Intel 4965AGN in one Lappy and Atheros AR5008 in the other, all conencted at 300mb/s, so should allow up to 37.5 MB/s, but get around 5-7MB/s, via Wired Gigabit Ethernet I get 15MB/s.

Waiting for the 450mb/s N Routers to come out so can up the transfer rate over Wifi, no sure when, then will upgrade to an Intel 5350 which has the benefit of Wimax to..

I'm on 10mb Internet at the moment..

I expect most would use their free N router, with only a few using their G routers

Can get it for £31/month with a phone line which is reasonable as there is no competition for them yet.
