Painfully slow download speeds

I'm on 60mb and have been getting 7.4mbs consistently (subject to TM) since I got it. However since Saturday this has dropped off to under 500kbs - I was getting 330kbs on Usenet just now. Any ideas what may be causing it or how I can resolve it without having to attempt to make my self understood to an Indian call-centre?

A Virus or Malware could possibly effect your computer or connection ?
Try running Online Antivirus Scanner and Malwarebytes anti-malware

I've not d/l anything for a good few days & this was only a 1.5gb file, so don't think it's traffic shaping. It was bad at about 11:30pm Saturday (last time I tried) too. Even when I'm traffic managed I normally get about 3.5 mbs
Re virus - it's a fresh install of a few weeks & I'm running MSE which doesn't flag anything up - I do need to re-install Malwarebytes though.

I'd still just try the eset scanner as it found a virus which MSE didn't few weeks back with me so worth a try I suppose?

I will give it a go, cheers
I spoke to VM today just to flag it up & they "ran some tests" apparently which found nothing. It now seems to be back to normal this evening so fingers crossed.

A little different since I spoke to them and there was "no problem" (apart from the dropped packet of course).

FWIW VM are traffic shaping your Usenet downloads regardless of you being over your limit. I am on a 20MB line and only get 1.4Mb/sec with Usenet. If I activate my VPN then this rockets up to 19Mb/sec.
I can also see it when downloading large files from Microsoft or the like...it will zoom.

I've just tried using usenet.. i'm on a 100mb superfast connection too.

I've achieved 80.3kb/s ! Thats in fact appaling compared even to my original sky broadband which averaged around 6mb download but consistently gave me around 600kb/s

Also just done a speedtest using various servers. Best result so far is:

That's appalling.. I know it makes a difference after midnight. The other night i saw the speed shoot from 400kb/s to 6mb/s between 11:59 and 00:00! Even then i wasn't too impressed gives that i pay for 100mb... i expected more.

How do we set a vpn? I'm intrigued. To avoid a hijack i'll start another thread or do a couple of searches.

Funny this, yesterday my Superhub was having major issues connecting to the Cable network. (Rebooted the thing countless times) Wireless was fine, just the hub couldn't get Internet??

Eventually in the evening it was stable but the speed was horrendous. Speedtests came up with pretty much exactly the same as yours jagdeepp and I'm a pretty new customer (60MB) of around 3 months and up until this weekend it's been awful...

Are you based anywhere near West Oxfordshire jagdeepp, just trying to find out if there were cable issues in the area which caused it. noticed your speedtest went from Maidenhead, the same as mine?

I'm based in Langley, Slough. Maidenhead is my closest server. I do find some of the london one's give a higher reading. I now tend to prefer the speedtest on the bbc iplayer website.

No, not cable issues at all. This is all to do with traffic shaping methinks.

I just don't understand. I've had the service for just a week and a half now. The connection has dropped from the originally wonderful 96mbps to around 6-8. Of course after midnight its great and i get 89-92mb on average. However thats total madness. I pay a premium to enjoy that sort of speed when i return from work aand between around 6 through to 10pm. Why am i paying premium prices when i'm not actually getting close to 100mb till i'm asleep. It's only actually technically a 100mb connection over night!

I've already had a painfully long wait to get the service but i really do wonder whether i'd be better cancelling within 28 days and taking up bt infinity which promises its 60mb to me as a consistent speed...

It is unlikely that any service out there will give you the speed you pay for unless you pay for a lease line. That is why a consumer connection is £10-40 p/m and a 10Mbps lease line £500-1000 p/m.

It WILL be shaped and you will experience contention despite all the hear say that VM / infinity are non contended/shaped.

Only the lucky ones in 'quiet' low use areas will see the super speeds most of the time.

Oh, and in addition... Don't forget that the street cab carrying you VM broadband also carries all the VM TV for your area on the same pipe. 20 houses all watching and recording hi-def... On what is probably only a 100Mbps back haul from your cab.. Doesn't leave much room especially when the QOS will be heavily weighted to supply a stable TV connection. This would explain the decent over night connection.

Aside from the fact that's all downstream, the recording is done locally on your box and each channel is broadcast constantly, it's not streamed on demand to the Tivo. TV won't affect the internet bandwidth.

Interesting stuff - I'm in a real quandry - moving into a house next month with access to virgin fibre optic but no sign of BT infinity for the forseeable. I checked on a map and noticed that the exchange is miles away (actually in another city!!!) so adsl will be utterly hopeless I guess. What to do? I suppose I could just go with virgin until infinity does eventually pitch up. My main use would be for iplayer, ps3 and downloading music and the odd tv show/film here and there.

I seem to remember seeing a site some time back that showed a local map of who was using what ISP and what sort of speeds they were signed up to - any ideas what the site is called?

Thanks!

Forgot about this
In the main everything has been fine since; getting 7.4 mbs fairy consistently, except for the odd hiccup, which I can live with.

Reading through all theses posts and I have a question. I was originally on the VM hub and 10 meg bb and off peak was getting between 9 and 10.9 Mbs download speed. Upgraded to super hub and 30 meg and now my download speeds off peak are between 1mbs and 3.5 Mbs. Any idea why? The super hub is set up as modem and router.

You all need to ring Virgin. You should be getting a much better service.

I'm on the 30mb package, and get 30mb all day every day. In fact i actually get 32mb in nearly every download test i have done.
I'm not a heavy downloader so would never reach the usage caps, and don't use dodgy download/file sharing sites.
Sky anytime + and Netflix never buffer, and start almost straight away. However, i have found BBC iPlayer to buffer occasionally (i think the problem is at their end). The connection is shared by five peope in my house, and we never seem to compromise each others web usage.
So for us, 30mb seems to be more than enough. I wonder if a lot of these problems are being caused by all the updating/doubling of the speeds. People are so concerned with having the highest download speed, that they are not stopping to think if they actaully need it. Speed is great for downloading files from fast site/servers, but most of the time, the server at the other end is slowing you up. We are due to be doubled some time between October and July 2013. To be honest, i'm in no rush. Stability and consistency are far more important than out and out download speed.

Trust me, i'm no lover of Virgin as i had a horrendous time just trying to get set up. But some people are getting a good service. Contact them and insist on getting what you are paying for!

iPlayer HD streams at about 1.5-2Mbps regardless... 5mb-gig connection no difference.

Cant get over 10mb on speedtest site and thats using 15 different locations.

REALLY tempted to do BT Infinity but being forced to have a phone as well for an extra £10 for line rental and an 18 month contract.

Edit
Forgot to mention, im on 100mb.
