Virgin Media package - is it good value?

Would appreciate opinions on this issue...

I'm currently paying VM £28.10/month for Broadband:L and phone line rental with free evening & W/End calls. My current broadband connection speed is way fast enough for me at a measured 10Mb/s and is due to be increased sometime soon.

Looking around at available deals, I realised that the loyalty discount I was getting from VM - which looks good on paper - just brought my monthly payment into line (more or less) with that of a new customer and of course, the new customer also currently benefits from an on-line (sign-up?) discount of £40 and half price line rental for six months when signing up to an 18 month contract.

I don't object to companies offering 'sweeteners' to new customers but I don't see why the charges after 'sweeteners' should match the price an existing, long time customer - with a loyalty discount - is paying. It didn't make me feel very loyal!

So, in a fit of pique, I cancelled my contract. Now, it appears the VM retentions department are repeatedly 'phoning me. I have yet to take their call.

What reduction, if any, do you think I should hold out for?

There are many other packages by copper cable providers that are much cheaper but I know in my area, broadband speeds are low at about 1 to 3Mb/s which could cause problems when I stream standard definition TV from iPlayer. And BT infinity isn't yet available to me.

Definitely take the call and have a chat with retentions. Quote what the other ADSL services in your area are offering and if they give you any of that pony about "well it's an up-to service that's not guaranteed whereas Virgin is", mention that the wireless on the SuperHub is crap and that the Virgin traffic management policy renders their alleged superior speeds redundant. What's the point in having 30MB if it'll throttle you after you've downloaded a few gigs?

As a benchmark, I used to have exactly the same package as you. A week after I cancelled my contract, retentions called me and offered to match Orange with £18 per month for 10MB, free weekend and evening calls plus free SuperHub. I said I'll think about it and when the guy called back later, I said that the 10MB wasn't good enough. He immediately offered to bump it up to 30MB. Again, I said I'd think about it.

Another week later, he rang back and I said that the Orange offer was still better for me as I had an Orange moby that offered further discounts. He said he'd do me the same package (30MB broadband, free evening and weekend calls and a free SuperHub) for £16 quid on a 12 month contract which was fine for me.

The guys at retentions are usually decent. The one I spoke to explained that I was getting various discounts for taking broadband and a phone plus further loyalty discounts for being an existing customer. He also said that after 12 months, the price would shoot up to 35 quid or thereabouts and that I should ring at month 11 to cancel or see what other deal they could offer.

Bottom line, take the call from retentions, be armed with all the best deals in your area and you shouldn't have any probs securing a better contract.

Thanks for your reply, Dodgy_Geezer - a very interesting read.

I was about to log on to the forum to update and close this thread, when your reply appeared. Sod's law, I took the call from VM retentions department earlier this afternoon and so have already negotiated a deal. Wish I'd been armed with the info you posted. Oh well, I'm not unhappy with my new deal...

Here's the package I secured after playing dumb (not a stretch) and a little haggling:

£24.90/month with the first month free for a 12 month contract (so effectively £22.83/month) and includes unlimited anytime free UK landline calls. 10MB broadband.

The unlimited anytime UK landline calls will save me a packet as I "work" from home and had been using a secondary telephone provder (Utility Warehouse) for cheap daytime calls - VM have never been competitively priced when it comes to call costs. Utility Warehouse were about to increase their charges so I've just cancelled my contract with them.

I'll learn from your posting next time and call VM retentions after 11 months. Cheers.
