My area (South West London) was suppoed to be done by July and it's now been pushed back to October-December. Not too bothered, I signed up for another 12 months on a good deal well before the double speed promo was announced and 30MB is plenty for me. As many have pointed out, I'd much rather a stable connection than a fast unreliable one.

I'm starting to get the impression that Virgin have severely underestimated the amount of back haul they need to support these upgrades and are hurriedly upgrading their network to cope, hence putting back the speed increases.

Managed to get my laptop back from my folks and after testing a few sites ( including the namesco London server , I'm in Manchester ) I'm getting steady 55/57s when connected on Ethernet.

So its the usual wireless nonsense from the hub.

Spoke to them to find out why mine still wasn't done, even though the site said March - April (even in July), anyway the site now says it's done in the area, still not done, rang them and even though we're on XL 30meg, would only do it if we agreed to another contract and a £3.7x increase a month.

Absolute joke although not massively bothered as leaving them in 3 weeks and never going back to them again anyway.

My upgrade date was pushed back from July to December - February.

I gave them a call yesterday as I'm well out of contract but was still paying a higher price.

They've now bumped me up to 100meg and are charging me £10 a month less! Happy days.

I'm also still using the old black UFO modem and the lady said at it was fine for 100mb. So no superhub.

Is that a good thing or bad? I would only use the SH in modem mode anyway.

Just found out my area is suffering from a High Utilisation fault. Now I know why my speed upgrade has been delayed.

Initially my area was supposed to be upgraded by October 2012, but now it shows "between March 2013 and August 2013".

I'm on 10Mb cable broadband, my initial 12 month contract ended this month. I wanted to cancel as new customers get 30Mb for the same price, and I pointed that out. So a nice lady over the phone offered me £4/month discount (so currently paying £18.50/month). I cannot complain. Speed doesn't matter that much to me.. 10Mb is more than I need. I wouldn't mind only 5Mb speed for another £4/month discount

Obviously I don't mind anything that improves my services (including speed) as long as it doesn't cost me more

Oh and I think they cannot just upgrade me to 30Mb, because I would have to get a Super Hub first.. I use an older VM Hub.

Hi Crovon,

May I ask what you were paying before the upgrade. I rang them today as I was paying £30 per month on 30mb with the same date as you for the speed doubling and they doubled the speed there and then to 60mb?

That's strange, I was quite certain that (for VM at least) only the Superhub supports DOCSIS3.0..

My area was done at the start of September. Installed the super hub myself and am now running at about 56Mb dl, which is nice.

Well since my area aint due an upgrade till Aug 2013, I decided to phone up to complain as my account already shows me as being on one of the double speed packages. Was told by the Complaints Rep that my speed was double from 10mb to 30mb, but explained that I downgraded from 50mb to 30mb and was told I would be 60mb come Oct. She says that person gave me the wrong info, so she is putting me on Phone Line and 60mbs BB for £26.90 per month, so Ive doubled my speed and paying £1.50 less.

I don't recall receiving e-mail notifications for any previous upgrades. I wasn't getting too exited as when I checked a while back they had pushed my area to Feb/March 2013. Just checked again and they appear to be back on track, with an anticipated completion at the end of this month.

Hmmm.... According to the Virgin site, when I checked it on Friday, when I entered my post code the status changed to "Your area is ready. Congratulations! The new double speed boosts are up and running in your area".

I checked a number of times over the weekend and my L (10Mb/s) cable connection is still running at 10Mb/s.

you may need a new modem/router (superhub) to take advantage of the speed increase, give them a ring and ask if you do, if not ask them where your speed increase is.

I was going to give them a couple of days and then drop them a line. I can't remember the model number, but I was issued with a new cable modem when the package I am on was originally upgraded to 10 meg. The original was one of the big grey CMs (about the size of an external CD/DVD drive) and it was replaced with the much smaller blue model.

As far as I understood, this one should be good for speeds up to 30 meg, which I was happy with as I don't really want the Super Hub. I've got my own Firewall and Wireless kit and will only switch all of this functionality off in the SH. Plus having seen it at a friends house it is about 3 times the size of my blue CM.

Unfortunately, as you were on tier L you should move to 30 Mb/s. Your blue modem can only go to 20Mb/s on the Virgin network because the tiers above 20Mb/s use channel bonding. So it's a SuperHub with all its joys for you.

Maybe I'm missing the point. I appreciate that if channel bonding is present then I'll be forced to use a SH. But as I'm currently on 10 meg, doubling it should take me to 20, not 30, and my blue CM should still be OK.

I think VM are intending to move to 30, 60 and 120Mbps speeds. It probably simplifies their billing and provisioning systems.

AIUI those of us on Tier M go to 20Mb/s (eventually), while those of you on Tier L "double" to 30Mb/s (for the reason FatJez gives).
Taken with the fact that we pay the same, it's something of a sore point with me!

Another interesting observation.

When visiting the generic Virgin Media "we are doubling your speed, find out when it is going to happen" site and entering my post code, it states that the upgrade has been completed.

Yesterday I logged into the "My Virgin Media" section of their web site and it confirmed that I was on their "L" broadband package. I also noticed a banner at the top of the page concerning the upgrade process. Clicking on the "Find out more" link results in a page stating that "Your area isn't ready yet. Our engineers are still upgrading the network."

What it also confirms is I will go from 10Mb to 20Mb - not 30.

Quote:
Your area isn't ready yet

Our engineers are still upgrading the network area by area so that you can enjoy more of the UK's fastest broadband.

Find out when we're upgrading your area. Check my area

Here's what you're on now and what you'll get after you've been upgraded:

Your current speed is up to 10Mb

Your new speed is up to 20Mb

Owing to Vm's (?deliberately) obscure web pages on the subject of speed doubling I can't now substantiate my suggestion with a link.
However, during my trawl of forums, I have more than once come across the suggestion that Tier L customers have the option of going to 30Mb/s after being doubled, with a one-off payment for a Superhub.
or Deep Blue Sea?
