Virgin Broadband & Astraweb / USenet

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on my problem.

I've just switched to Virgin from UKFSN and my downlad speeds are apalling.

I'm currently using grabit and Astraweb and im getting 30 - 50 kbps. (I do the majority of downloading through the night)

I did a broadband speed test and its showing 3.21MBps.

Can anyone shed any light on whats happening.

Thanks in advance.

I'm with Virgin/Astraweb and have no problems. How many connections are you using?

Hi Chris

Thanks for getting back to me. Off the top of my head i think its between 12 and 15.

I spoke to CS and they got me to download a file off their servers and it was downloading at 390kbps. They suggested it was a problem with Astraweb. I've tried changing the port number, but its made no difference.

Any ideas

Re: Virgin Broadband & Astraweb / USenet

Is it a consistent problem with everything you download at all?

FWIW, I have mine set to 20 connections and pointing to the Astraweb EU SSL servers and get decent speeds like that.

Have you tried the various Astraweb servers?

As a test I downloaded XP SP2 from Microsoft and it was downloading at 400kbps.

I tried changing the server to Astraweb EU and changing the connections to 20, but all i was getting was about 15 kbps.

This would suggest that I've either got a problem with Astraweb or Grabit. The annoying thing is, I was geting good download speeds (although erratic) with my previous ISP.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what I can try to resolve this?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Virgin Broadband & Astraweb / USenet

Have you checked your antivirus? I found that by default the latest Kaspersky was spending far too much time monitoring my usenet download connections in Newsleecher. I changed the settings to allow Newsleecher a bit more trust and now it's back to maxing out my 20Mb link.

I set VM as my primary source though, and Astraweb has a lower priority, but even when I'm wholely relying on Astraweb it's still pretty much full speed with multiple connections.
