Windows XP users Do you have pitiful speeds on your connection at VM

If you are using windows XP... Try: click on start menu, then right click on my computer select properties at the bottom, select hardware, then device manager, then left double click network adapters, choose the non 1394 option by left double clicking, choose advanced then on 'speed duplex settings' select full autonegotiate click ok

I set this to something else a few weeks ago following advice from the vm website then forgot I had done so... I have since been getting a max of 6Mb I remembered to reset it to full auto about half an hour ago and hey presto 18.5Mb well cool

Give it a go you never know

Re: Windows XP users Do you have pitiful speeds on your connection at VM

That's interesting!

I checked my settings and they turned out to be 100 Full Duplex. When I changed it to auto negotiation the system slowed-down significantly.

I changed it back and all is well again.

Re: Windows XP users Do you have pitiful speeds on your connection at VM

I always thought the settings you have would depend on what nic and drivers you have installed and that 10mbs was fast enough for a cable modem, also wouldn't having it on a setting rather than auto be better?

hi curly I am now getting around 19500 kbps each time I check speed on various sppedtest sites with my machine set to auto negotiate whereas when set to anything else I am lucky to get 5000kbps so in my instance the setting is best for me and my setup

Re: Windows XP users Do you have pitiful speeds on your connection at VM

ive noticed pitiful speeds over the last few days, on 20Mb and getting 1-2Mb over last 2days at least on every speed tester i can care to mention. Changed from auto to full duplex, rebooted no difference. Reset cable modem, no difference strange ive had over 10mbps in the past no difference in set up, could my ageing NTL 200 modem be on its way out? must have had it for at least 4 years.....

Re: Windows XP users Do you have pitiful speeds on your connection at VM

i work for a broadband cable company and its not NTL so i dont much about their modems. but if your getting slow speeds its not always down to your isp.
First thing i do when a cust calls with slow speeds is to check for slowness for their ubr. If ok then i`ll ask them to ping the bbc if under 30ms then thats fine.
then i`ll get them to download 2 files from our site going thru our servers. and to honest 8 times out of 10 its down to their pc. I get them to run netstat -a command to check tcp and udps 10-12 should be listed more than 20 and ur pc is infected with spyware. alot of times its down to their router. but some cable modems cant handle the 20mb service telewest 4200 5100 5101 and 2100 v2 modems can handle the speeds. also if ur using usb them the max speed with usb is about 8mb with ur overheads. so before ur phone ur isp make sure its not ur pc thats at fault guys. duplex is always along shot but always worth checking

Re: Windows XP users Do you have pitiful speeds on your connection at VM

i presume most of you know his but once you download a certain amount in one day with NTL/Virgin then you get capped, if you have the 20mbit service it gets reduced to just 5mbits and all other speeds e.g 4mbit and 2mbit are cut by half.
And they say no limit broadband, if you ask me that is heavy limits and i don't like it.

Re: Windows XP users Do you have pitiful speeds on your connection at VM

Virgin ADSLs speeds are **** poor, and I am very unhappy.
We were with NTLWorld 1mbps service, and constantly got a 1mbps connection come rain or shine, day or night.

Transferred over to Virgin Media 8mbps service, and the QoS bombed. I phoned them up, and they told me "Oh yes, the highest speed you can get is 2mbps in your area".

a) I wasn't even getting that at the time
b) I'm currently staring at Newsbin on my server, which is fluctuating between 4.5mbps and 6.2mbps

I got hold of a script (which only works for USB modems and Netgear DG834GT routers (that Virgin supply)) which basically tests your lines latency and reconnects it until you get under 70ms.
However in the evenings I am constantly seeing 200+ ms.

I got onto a good BAM for a week or so, and my connection was great, but then it went off the boil. I get great speeds at this time (i.e. 6.30 in the morning!!) but I bet when I get home again tonight, it'll have gone down to sub-512k speeds once more.

Re: Windows XP users Do you have pitiful speeds on your connection at VM

sounds like a lattency issue. I take it ur on a LLU. call up when u have the problem it will need to go thru to their 2nd line. Now i used to work for AOL broadband tech support here in scotland and we could only test from the master socket so virgin.net tech support will ask u if uve changed ur filter and if ur at ur master socket before they transfer you. hope this helps

Re: Windows XP users Do you have pitiful speeds on your connection at VM

Hi thanks for your replies, it is definitely a symptom of Virgin's network having problems, Ichecked last night on NTL/Virgins own speed test site and got between 1 and 2 Mbps, went across the road to the inlaws tested with their connection on their pc and cable modem (both different to mine) and they were also getting 1 -2 mbps. This was around 5.30pm. Checked mine this morning on the same speed test site (after clearing cached copy) and was getting around 10mbps. Neither of us has downloaded any files before any of the tests only web browsing.....definitely something fishy going on in Virginmedialand..........but begrudge phoning them and wasting money getting fobbed off but I suppose its not going to get any better, might try retentions first
