VirginMedia Cable DSL Hardware Question

I am considering switching to VirginMedia's cable BB as I am moving house - where I am now has no cable available. Right now I get broadband through my phoneline and use a Wireless DSL Modem router.

My question is what I need with cable?

Is there a Wireless Cable Modem router (ie. has the cable modem built in). This is not easy to figure out from various vendors...

Would also be good if I can get some USB ports that means I can plug printer and hard drives into the router so that I can share them.

Any help and suggestions gratefully received.

Re: VirginMedia Cable DSL Hardware Question

If you're receiving broadband over your phoneline just now, that'd be ADSL and an adsl router you're using just now. If you went with VM, you'd be looking for a DSL (cable) router. The majority of these come with multiple ethernet ports, I've not heard of any sporting usb ports for printers, etc. but maybe someone else can better advise on those.

Unlike adsl though, the wireless dsl router would attack TO your VM installed cable modem via ethernet rather than replacing it as it would normally with an adsl router with a modem built in.

Re: VirginMedia Cable DSL Hardware Question

Kind of wanted only one box - the wireless router. Understand that you plug your cable modem into the router.

Is there no single box that is the cable modem and wireless router all in one?

Re: VirginMedia Cable DSL Hardware Question

I was looking for the exact same solution as you about a year ago and there didn't seem to be anything on the market that was a cable modem and router in one then. I don't know if things have changed now but I have not heard of anything, so unfortunately you might be, like me, stuck with having 2 devices for networking.

Re: VirginMedia Cable DSL Hardware Question

Hi, I'm in the same boat, had any luck?

Previously on Freeserve with a 3Com ADSL Modem and Router all-in-one and looking for an all-in-one for DSL but as far as I can make it it's not going to happen.

Anyone recommened a wireless router if there are no all-in-ones? Been looking at NetGear mainly.

Cheers
