Hi All,

I'm still in shock how good the DVD32FLR is connectred up to my humble infocus 4805 DLP jobbie.

I've twaeked the picture using DVE and will also be doing the greyscale correction next week so I'm expecting a little more improvement.


I have to say the picture is stunning on 576i so I'd like to know has anyone added a scaler to thier picture to take it to 1080i and what the results are.

I dont want to sound sceptical but is there really a big inprovement as the SD piture from the FLR still amazes me.

IIRC the native resolution of your PJ is 854x480 so there will always be some processing taking place to scale to this size with one of the standard res signals. I'm note sure sending a 1080i signal will offer a significant jump in PQ and it may have a negative outcome depending on how well your PJ performs when fed a 1080 interlaced signal.

A don't know if this PJ supports 1:1 pixel input but if it does you may see some benefit using a VP that can output at this cusom res. The other area that a VP may be of benefit is calibration but it depends if it's possible to properly dial in gamut, grayscale, white point etc via the PJ's controls.

Personally I'd look at upgrading the PJ as this will probably have the biggest impact on PQ performance.

The 4805 will support pixel matching so you should be looking towards 480p to get the best from this PJ; and yes, the picture is much better than the resolution suggests and improves when fed a HD signal. I had an Iscan HD scaler hooked up to my 4805 and it was there as a switchbox that scrubbed up lower quality sources rather than improving the PQ that the PJ was capable of producing.

Assuming that your player has a DVI output then you can get the best picture from source by keeping the signal path entirely digital. Although Avi's advice is spot on about upgrading your PJ being more bang for buck than getting a scaler, trying an Oppo or similar low cost DVD player with DVI output and custom scaling might surprise you if your player hasn't got these features onboard. (Edit: Just read your sig so this advice is for general consumption.)
