Red face 23.976 driving me mad in the UK

Hi

I just came accross this section by pure accident, I don't know if anybody can help, or even if its possible...or even if I am IN the right section, as reading the title I realised I really had no idea what any of it meant..

I watch allot of 720/1080p NTSC material, in mkv format on my PAL Bravia 40W5500

Initially it took me hours of research to find out why I had motion so sexual and then JUDDER.... then perfect sexual motion for a few seconds then JE.. JEEERRRRKK.

In the end I found it it was the framrate in the UK needs to be 25FPS (PAL) and I am trying to watch 23.976 FPS stuff.

As it is, I cannot find PAL 25FPS mkv stuff ANYWHERE.

I can use my Film Mode AUTO 2 on my TV which sorts it I THINK by using 24p true cinima (I am still very new to all this) but this takes away the IINNNSAAAAAAANE motionflow of auto1 + 100hz.

I have tried messing about with reclock which seems to help by forcing 25FPS but its still not bang on and I am sure causes some odd things, so in the end I gave up.

however, anybody here know if I have any options? other than to buy a TV from the USA ofc.

Buying a tv from USA will not help (at least I'd think it extremely doubtful).

How are you playing back these files? What resolution and frame rate is the source device actually outputting to your display?

mkv from my PC at original size/fps I guess.

Most of them run at 23.976FPS.

Plugged into my TV via DVI-HDMI 1920x1080

It is the same with 3 players I have tried, MPC, VLC, and theatertek and is a very common known problem.

Re: 23.976 driving me mad in the UK

ok: Your TV is likely to be taking in the 24fps material and then either playing it back at 72Hz or 60Hz. If you have a bluray player then playback a BD disc in to it at 1080p24 and see if it looks like you are seeing with your pc. If it does then it's probable that there is some interframe motion processing going on in the tv that is falling down periodically causing the big judder. If there isn't then the problem lies with your PC's playback.

Your description of super smooth pans followed by really obvious judder or dropped frames sounds like a motion processing problem or just a processing power problem. I'm not familiar with PC playback but I'd be looking to see if your graphic card has some stupid motion enhancing process in it's set up that can be disabled. 24fps is inherently NOT smooth. It has a LOW temporal resolution so it will look juddery when played back at 24fps(on horizontal and vertical pans especially). This judder will be constant though not random. That you are seeing a smooth motion suggests some other motion processing at work...and as usual, it doesn't seem to be working that well.

It is extremely unlikely that your TV is taking in 24fps and trying to play it back at 50Hz.

Re: 23.976 driving me mad in the UK

I have a 3 year old Sony X Series LCD which is only 50hz and 60hz. I watch 23.976fps mkvs at 50Hz and get no judder using my HTPC. I run reclock that speeds up the mkvs to 25fps and changes the pitch. It does mean that films run faster just like PAL DVDs but I can live with that.

I already said it works if I change the speed to 25FPS, its divisable by 50hz and 100hz.

My point was I was not too happy with reclock, I think it can cause some artifacts/anomolies.

Reclock causes no artifacts or anomolies on my HTPC. I use the EVR renderer on Windows XP. Have you tried asking the same question on the Slysoft reclock forum?

Re: 23.976 driving me mad in the UK

I never experienced an hassle with ReClock - used to use it in conjunction with Powerstrip to set up custom resolutions - for example 1920x1080p at 72 Hz, with Reclock adjusting 23.976 up a little to 24 Hz, enabling 3:3 cadence. It turned software DVD playback (and early HD on WMF-9) from being unwatchable due to skipped frames to good.

Re: 23.976 driving me mad in the UK

I'd just use Film Mode Auto 2 - that's what it's supposed to look like. All that weird motion smoothing stuff just looks wrong on movies. imho.

Re: 23.976 driving me mad in the UK

I must say I haven't noticed that. I play a lot of 720p american TV shows that I've downloaded to my PC and watch on my Plasma.

Do get some slight sync issues sometimes, though that's probably a codec issue.
