HDMI - 1 source to 2 displays - splitters

Hi all, I've spent some time searching the boards but a lot of the advice is above my level of understanding, so forgive me if this is well covered.

I recently bought a cheap HDMI splitter, to take a signal from a PS3 to a Samsung HDTV and Sanyo Z5 projector. Link. The splitter is designed to work with only one display at a time. So you turn one off/the other on and all is good.

This works for video, but when both cables are connected and the Sanyo Projector is turned off (standby off as well) the audio isn't recieved by the Samsung HDTV (even if everything is off and only the PS3 and TV are turned on).

Here are my questions!

Should the splitter work, should I try another similar product?
Is the miss matched devices the problem?
Do they both need to take audio over HDMI?
could anyone help with a set up that would work?

Hi,

You want a distribution amplifier rather than a splitter. Something like this one:

Hi,
I've been using a couple of splitters like these for a while:
HDMI 2 port Splitter Amplifier / Video Player 1x2 HDTV on eBay (end time 09-Oct-09 02:39:47 BST)

Both used to split an output between a Plasma and Projector without problems.

As Paul says above, that splitter outputs to both displays at the same time.
So it doesn't matter if one or two displays are on.
I have just used one to split the HDMI signal from a SKY HD box to two plasma displays. Both receive picture and sound at the same time etc.
You can get them from Micro direct if you don't fancy ebay/hongkong etc...(about £30)

Just for anyone else coming across this thread, I use the following 1 in 2 out device that allows both TVs/PJs to be used at the same time so no buttons to worry about to get a picture on the right screen, it works fine at 1080/50 or 60p over a 5 metre cable.
