thats very interesting indeed, we all are aware that Laserdisc is an analog recording, and although it may not be the best in some cases, the situation is is that we would need to try and get the best possible quality out of them, however i got abit confused when u stated this:

Quote:
The cld 2950 like all laserdiscs video is analog, actually FM, the laser reads a PWM signal from the disc were it is demodulated in the chip to a AM output signal. The AC3 dolby digital and DTS signals are also modulated, so to encode those signals back then from the laser directly to an A/D output with hardware and software the computer would see was considered too silly and expensive, and any fringing errors would still be present anyway.
Instead align the laser and shore up the chassis for the tightest tolerences possible to keep errors to a minimum then upgrade the discrete components in the signal path and power supply to the best available to reduce noise levels and adjust all wave forms for optimum and reference output.
Can you be abit more clear on what u were explaining here? i dont know if this is something like an internal mod or another explaination of how your laserdisc player works. And what kind of errors would be present as u mentioned?

Also may i ask, why would it be this box u're using as ur output? how are you connecting this to your LD player? In addition, how does the quality compare when connecting ur LD player to ur TV via composite? with your modded method?

hi
The lasers of that vintage had a lot of adjustments available, adjustments on the actual laser assembly itself and the circuit boards, best eye pattern, tracking error offsets and so on, all for the experienced engineer to adjust.
The mechanical tracking assembly and rotating assembly had quite alot of play in them that could be all tightened up with some careful work.
The discrete signal electronics as I said were all replaced, ie capacitors, resistors, connectors, cables, phono sockets and smd transistors for better bandwidth and performance types, the ground returns were also improved and the power supply components were uprated as well.
The output was composite video out from the laserdisc via neutrik plug and connectors to the Convergent Design SD box BNC video input
the video input which was then processed through a five line comb filter, sampled through a 12 bit A/D at 4X and offered as a 12 bit D/A 16X output on component or uncompressed 1394 or 10 bit 4:2:2 SDI, all outputs are available at the same time.
I suppose today you could use a standard composite video to usb or firewire converter and see what the results are like.
best of luck.

that sounds like alot of work u've done on ur laserdisc player, however ur model (if im correct) is one of the last models that Pioneer was making? And from ur description it sounds like if Pioneer made them for expertised people to fiddle around with them.

You said you replaced stuff like the capacitors, resistors, connectors, cables, phono sockets and smd transistors for better bandwidth and performance types, but with what may i ask? with better identical components? But how exactly would they yield to give better performance or quality perhaps?

And i see you have still connected the player via BNC connector?

Now, as said before, i dont know much about A/D or D/A converters, like if they come as as chip or circuit board you could buy, but my method which i am hoping to do, is take an industrial player like the LD-V8000 which has been said to give the purest signal, and attach an A/D converter from the video output internally, so the quality would be retained purely but in a digital signal to which it will be captured. May i ask from your experience, is this possible? Or could my theory be correct that the quality would be better than if it was connected or captured conventionally?

Thumbs up Good day from an LD Collector

Hi LD_OUT,

How are you getting on with the LD section in your system?

Are you getting there?

Kindest Regards

Hi LD_OUT,

Sorry for the late reply ''working nights''
Go for the big one?
Doe's this mean player or setup

I'm not sure if I can help as my system needs setting up.
I have the LD equipment purchased, with the HLD X0 currently reserved in Japan(should be completed by June.) if all goes well.

I will need to purchase the AV stands and then take some annual leave in order to spend the lime to test and install.

I have been reading your LD threads, and am impressed by your apparent dedication with LD....of which there's not many of us left.

Hope you've had a pleasant weekend

Sincere Regards

LD_OUT, you might be interested in this post on a thread (which I started) over on AVS:

Hi Marcus Wood,

Sorry for the intrusion,

I have just read the thread on AVS Forum, and must say a great informative read indeed.

Thank you' as I am sure LD_Out will appreciate this as well.

Kindest Regards
