Recommend a DVD Player to accompany a HDP

I have recently bought a Lumagen HDP (no sdi inputs) form these forums. I have also got a PS3 (slim) for blu-ray playback, but I am now looking at my options for dvd playback, I understand that I could set the playback from the PS3 to either output a DVD at 576i or 1080p dependant on the media input, without any menu changes

My problem is that I also have many region 1 dvds, and the PS3 has not been made multiregion for dvds yet

Thus I am looking for a cheap (sub £100) dvd player that I could potentially use to play my dvds (region 1, and region 2) through the Lumagen.

Anyone have some recommendations I should be looking at?

Thanks

R

p.s. I also have a multiregion EP35, but I think it is a few menu options to change the resolution output (does it even do 480i and 576i?), which isn't family friendly, unless there is a way to force/change the output automatically?

Unless it's changed I don't think you can send 576i/480i over HDMI from the PS3. IIRC my PS3 (60gb model) only output progressive at SD level. Maybe this is different on the slim model.

The Oppo 980 is a decent digital transport and support 576i/480i over HDMI and doesn't molest the output. You also have user control over colour space and there's no issue with CUE and it's MR.

I have a Tosh HDA1 and with some FW version it's possible to use EDID to force colour space to 4:2:2 but I've never been able to force 480i over HDMI.

Thanks. That is interesting about the PS3, but as I was looking for a dvd player for the region 1 dvds, not so much of a problem.

Have heard oppo's are good, will see what I can find. Also on my potential shortlist are the Pioneer 668 or 868. Do you have any knowledge on these?

It's worth double checking the PS3 slim but the PS3 I have will only send 576p over HDMI (I'm not using latest software). Thus you won't benefit from the Lumagan film deinterlacing unless you can get 576i.

Sorry I can't help with the Pioneer DVD players you mention but I wasn't that impressed with the LX91 I used. I used the 980 for a year or so as a digital transport to a video processor and it performed well providing accurate 576i/480i YCbCr 4:2:2 output over HDMI.

Re: Recommend a DVD Player to accompany a HDP

Thanks again for your help AVI.

I have posted another query here, and wondered if you have a chance, whether you have any feedback on it.

Thanks

I'll reply here but the jist I think is you're looking for a way to force the resolution of the player to output based on disc content (rather player menu selection) or forced by EDID by the Lumagen. I had a S350 but didn't try EDID to force changes in output res. My guess is it may prove problematic and involve re-initiating HDMI handshake i.e. powering down the player etc based on observing other products.

The easiest approach is a player that supports source direct. This is a must for me when using a VP and the Oppo 83 works a treat in this respect and it's MR Blu-ray/DVD modded. The problem I found is that it isn't always obvious how Blu-ray is encoded. I watched a movie recently that was 1080i/50 and "knowing" Blu-ray has 1080p/23.98, 576i and 1080p/24 all on the same disc at different times !
