Really Confused, Really need help..

ok, im new to the 1080p world, although i do have understanding, but maybe im missing something.

here is my problem :

i have a DVD hdmi upscaler, a ps3, and a samsung SM2333HD full hd 1080p 23" monitor/tv.

i switch between ps3/HDMI upscaler with one cable i have - HDMI to DVI.

now, the actual problem: my dvd's are not upscaling to 1080p. this is all pal systems by the way, except the hdmi upscaler is multi region unlocked.

here's what confuses me, my HDMI upscaler and ps3 can obviously upscale to 1080p, both are capable, when i put in REGION 1/NTSC DVD's into the HDMI upscaler, it upscales to 1080p NO PROBLEM. when i put pal dvd's in the upscaler, it won't upscale above 720p!!, i obviously can't test region 1 dvd's in my pal ps3, but i had a multi region dvd, i put it in my ps3, and the ps3 upscaled it to 1080p.

so what is going on, have i missed something? do pal dvd's not upscale to Full 1080p? is it my HDMI to DVI cable? why do my region1 dvd's go to 1080p, but my pal/region 2 dvd's don't!?

please help, please.. im really confused!

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

What is your upscaler?
There is no tehnical reason why you cannot do what you want. It sounds like a physical limitation of your scaler or incorrect setup

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

Equipment im using:

HDMI Upscaler: Philips DVP5980

PlayStation 3

Samsung SM2333HD 23" 1080p Monitor / TV

yes there shouldn't be a technical problem, which is why this is confusing me sooo much!

again - my ps3 won't upscale my PAL dvd's to full 1080p either, so its both my PAL ps3 and my Philips DVP5980 hdmi upscaler.

sorry for repeating my self - the philips upscales my region 1/ntsc dvd's to 1080p, and my ps3 can upscale DVD's to 1080p, as proven with the multi region dvd i put into it.

none of this makes any sense to me, so PAL dvd's can definitely be upscaled to 1080p?

ahhh what on earth is going on

i bought 2x HDMI to HDMI cables to test and make sure its not my HDMI to DVI cable some how..

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

OK I;ve read the maula for your display. I guess it's a PC monitor that just happens to have an in built dtv System. The manual ias pretty vague bit it looks to me like the only 1080p signal it likes is 1080P60. When it sends out its edid info to your phillips and PS3 it will be telling it that its optimal resolution is 1080P60. So they will not output 1080P50. The problem almost certainly lies with your choice of monitor I think

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

thats interesting gordon,

it is true that every time my monitor confirms its current resolution signal, it always has stated 1080p@60.

when it comes to pal dvd's they are reported to be at 60hz on the monitor but allways at a resolution of 1280x960@60

so maybe what you have concluded is true, does this mean my monitor will only accept 1080p signals from dvd's if they are NTSC, is ntsc 60hz allways? no?

also, thank you for helping me, and putting in the effort to do so, no one else in this forum replied.

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

NTSC is a 60 video standard.
PAL is a 50 Hz video standard.

Usually an upscaling dvd player would keep the 50 and 60 parts the same and just upscale the resolution.

The instructions for your tv say that it even though 1920x1080@50Hz isn't a supported resolution it will try to display it. The problem you have is that the display doesn't appear to be telling the sources this fact...it's just saying my preferred resolution is 1920x1080@59.94Hz(60Hz)...but I will also accept a slew of PC resolutions...ie XGA, VGA, SVGA, WXGA,

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

yeh, my ps3 xmb menu works at 1080p fine,

im quite disappointed feel like iv wasted my money on this monitor a bit now.

this monitor is obviously no good for 1080p for ps3/dvd upscalers that are not from the ntsc region.

i guess my last slim chance is if it some how works better through the hdmi ports rather than the dvi, although i guess that is just wishfull thinking.

thanks again gordon, your help was appreciated.

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

Use the HDMI port....I didn't see it had them in the instructions. Only saw stuff about the DVI port. I suspect if you go HDMI you will be sorted!

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

i won't bet on it, but we'll see tuesday, when the two hdmi cables come, fingers crossed, although if it doesn't work out, its not a big problem, as were also getting a HDTV tuesday, a nice 40" 1080p, so im sure that will sort out my dilema if my hdmi cables don't lol

i still intended to have this monitor as a pc monitor, but it was suppose to be an alterantive untill i get my hdtv in my own room (the hdtv coming tuesday is more or less owned by my parents) i gotta long way to save up till my sony, i just hope sony get there act together soon with that lame clouding issue.

the monitor/tv has 2 hdmi ports, 1 dvi, 1 vga, 1 scart and some audio ports, including optical out.

the other hdmi port is on the side under some little plastic cover.

so you think theres a really good chance it might accept 1080p@50hz signals through hdmi in's?

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

It might..and if it doesn't it'll probably accept 576p@50. Remember the source material is only either 1080i or 576i....all you are doing by sending 1080p to the set is choosing where the i-p conversion takes place. Your priorty should be to get 50Hz material displaying at 50Hz I think, then worry about where the best de-interlacing and scaling takes place.

Re: Really Confused, Really need help..

ok gordon, hdmi cables + tv came today,

first of all, the hdmi fixed my problem, through hdmi, my monitor is accepting and displaying 1080p@50hz, so my ps3 and hdmi upscaler now work with it perfectly fine, and woa.. what a difference HDMI is, (iv never used or seen it before)

i would say hdmi is little too 'sharp'.

thanks again for all your help, much appreciated.
