Buying Blu Ray - VP50 Up to The Job?

Hi Guys,

For the last few years I've had a VP50 sat at the heart of my AV system. A few compatibility issues with my SkyHD / Arcam AV9 aside, it has basically provided sterling service. But I'm now considering taking the plunge with Blu Ray and maybe an Arcam 888 processor.

I guess the question is will the VP50 still be able to add any value? Will it be able to switch the HD sound formats or will I be better using the Arcam as the audio switch? Will it be able to do anything of any value to the 1080p picture from a Blu Ray player?

Or will I just be better upgrading to a VP50 Pro? Indeed have DVDO got any newer VP products on the horizon that may be worth waiting for?

Any advice gratefully received.

Cheers, Roman

Re: Buying Blu Ray - VP50 Up to The Job?

Your VP50 does not have HDMI 1.3 so can't pass through High Def lossles audio and I'm afraid I am in the same boat. I use my Marantz AV amp to switch sources and decode audio, then the VP50 is plugged into the Marantz to process Standard Definition video, which it does reasonably well. The VP50 adds nothing to processing the video of Blu Ray which is already 1080P.

I am considering ditching the VP50 for an Edge as the trade in values of a VP50 against a VP50 Pro are disgusting. All simply to get HDMI 1.3...!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the reply. The configuration you have confirms my understanding of the situation. I'd thought that the VP50 may do some kind of processing to enhance a blu ray picture and add some value. I take it that it simply passes the image unaltered to the display?

Except colour processing, although the VP50-Pro has better ISF support.
