Can't get HD material to work through VP50

Got my VP50 working fine with my SD DVD player and my SD Freeview source

HD-DVD however is providing a corrupt picture - multicoloured pixels (noise) or a slight interpretation of a picture but heavy horizontal patterns making it hard to see that something is getting through.

Oddly a correct picture did appear once but the HD-DVD had froze and when I rebooted the player the pic was gone

Now I'm using component from HD-DVD into VP50. Note when component plugged direct into PW7 all resolutions work fine.

When component plugged into VP50 and Iscan RGBHV (annaloge) into HD15 of PW7 I get the problem.

As above, this RGBHV works fine with SD material but no matter what output I set the VP50 I get the above mentioned picture problem.

Any advice cordially welcomed

Re: Can't get HD material to work through VP50

That sounds like a problem I have with the VP50. About every one in three times I power the VP50 up (I don't leave it in standby, it's powered off when not in use) it starts up with the problem you've described. When this happens I simply switch power off to the VP50 wait a few seconds and then power up again and it's usually ok.

I normally have HD sources connected up (via HDMI) to the VP50 rather than SD so I've never really thought of it as a HD problem specifically, I've just considered it a general 'feature'.

Interesting.

I'll try rebooting it a few more times then

Which component input are you using? The Component 1 and 2 inputs on the VP50 (the RCA inputs) accept 480i/p, 576i/p, 720p and 1080i. The RGBHV (BNC) input takes only 480-720p (no i) and 1080i (annoyingly this means I can't use that input for my Wii). Neither type accept 1080p.

Your component output on the EP-35 (which I presume that you're using) will only output up to 1080i, but this might be restricted depending upon the disc that you're playing due to copy protection. Can't you use HDMI all the way through to the display?

Re: Can't get HD material to work through VP50

I've just picked up on something. Are you trying to run HDMI in, and RGBHV out??? If you are you can't because of HDCP. You will have to run HDMI out of the VP50 and into a HDMI/DVI to VGA converter. Or get a HDMI or DVI card for your PW7 and run it native (at 60Hz only).

Re: Can't get HD material to work through VP50

Thanks very much for your thoughts but worked it out by process of ilimination.

I'm using component in at 1080i and RGBHV out and that was fine.

Today was a little diferent as the screen was blue i.e. no signal at all from HD-DVD getting through the VP50.

Checking information button the VP50 was showing 1080i coming in and LED was blue to indicate processing was occuring.

The solution ?????

The deinterlacing options. Right or wrong the only way to get a picture is to change the setting to "Field Scale".

Manual covers all deinterlacing choices EXCEPT "Field Scale" so that was obviously no help but went though all possible changes and finally came across that one

Zooming in on King Kong HD-DVD as a picture test and very impressed with picture on my SD PW7 panel.

More playing over weekend but all major obstacles seem to have been sorted

Thanks again for all that had a read and especially to the guys who came up with possible solutions.

Re: Can't get HD material to work through VP50

I think that's a bug in the vp50 when outputting 852x480 - I'm sure PeteS had a similar issue.

Are you saying deinterlacing shouldn't have to be set to "Field Scale" it should work on any setting?

Is that how it is on yours?

Curious if this is the case as maybe I'm not getting the best deinterlacing on my 1080i material.

Re: Can't get HD material to work through VP50

I can use any of the deinterlacing options on mine for 1080i

Outputting via HDMI at 1024x768p though

Why not? The Wii can ouput 480p over component.

I think that's the issue. As I'm down scaling all the way to 852x480 I guess it restricts things.

One thing for sure is smooth edges are obvious going 1080i through VP50 and 852x480p out then if I go 1080i direct into PW7 so with Field Scale the deinlerlacing seems fine.

Appreciate your comments as it's been a difficult journey incorporating my VP50 in a some what unorthordox setup i.e. my ED Panel.

Sadly if you try and play any virtual console games on the Wii it outputs an interlaced signal. Hence input doesn't work.
