Is there low priced scalers?

Even "good" upscaling DVD-players are quite cheap, so why most of scalers are so expensive?

I would like to upscale pal scart SD from set-top-box to 1080p HDMI.

Re: Is there low priced scalers?

And you will gain next to nothing. Yes different upscalers do better jobs than others (JUST) but he long and short of it is you can not squeeze a quart out of a pint pot. Dependant on what STB you are using will depend on the overall quality, some are just so bad in the first place all you will be doing is upscaling a poor picture to a very big poor picture.
What STB are you referring to, how is it set up (RGB,16:9 etc etc) and what sort of quality Scart cable sre you using?
Remember rubbish in = rubbish out.

I have Topfield TF 6000 and about 1m long "bulk scart cable". 80% of Finnish DVB channels are in 16:9 and RGB seems to produce best colors.
TF 6000 has similar spec to TF 6500( http://www.topfield.co.uk/TF6500F.html ) that you have in UK.

Re: Is there low priced scalers?

I would say that the best way forward was to try upgrading your Scart cable if you feel the you have a weak link, but other than that you are in the laps of the broadcasters and how much quality bandwidth they use.

Re: Is there low priced scalers?

The scaler that is built into your television and that you are already using is probably quite cheap.

Yes I know So you guys are saying that similar scaling performance of upscaling DVD-players can not be mabe with similar price to SDTV programs?

The most expensive and sophisticated scaler in the world couldn't make Sky look as good as a DVD. Upscaled DVDs look better not because the scaling is better but because the original non-upscaled recordings are inherently better quality; they aren't riddled with compression artefacts.

The point I was making is that, if you're watching something on an HDTV and the picture fills the whole screen then it has been upscaled. A lot of people think that an upscaling DVD player somehow converts a DVD into a high-definition picture. (The player's manufacturers would like you to believe that, for example). Actually, if you're watching a picture that fills the screen, it's been upscaled, and it can't get any more upscaled just because you're using an external upscaler rather than the upscaler that is built into the TV. An external device may deinterlace and scale a bit better than the TV does, and may also have one or two other useful processing features, but it's still the same basic process.

As I say, the difference between a DVD and Sky is likely to be a lot bigger than the difference between a signal upscaled by the TV and the same signal upscaled by an external processor. It isn't the quality of the scaler in the player that makes the difference.
