The most expensive and sophisticated scaler in the world couldn't make Sky look as good as a DVD. Upscaled DVDs look better not because the scaling is better but because the original non-upscaled recordings are inherently better quality; they aren't riddled with compression artefacts.
The point I was making is that, if you're watching something on an HDTV and the picture fills the whole screen then it has been upscaled. A lot of people think that an upscaling DVD player somehow converts a DVD into a high-definition picture. (The player's manufacturers would like you to believe that, for example). Actually, if you're watching a picture that fills the screen, it's been upscaled, and it can't get any more upscaled just because you're using an external upscaler rather than the upscaler that is built into the TV. An external device may deinterlace and scale a bit better than the TV does, and may also have one or two other useful processing features, but it's still the same basic process.
As I say, the difference between a DVD and Sky is likely to be a lot bigger than the difference between a signal upscaled by the TV and the same signal upscaled by an external processor. It isn't the quality of the scaler in the player that makes the difference.
