v1280-dvi video converter

Hi there, A/V noob here,

I have seen this little device here (http://www.holdan.co.uk/tvone/1T-V1280DVI.htm)

which claims to upscale composite, YUV and s-video to DVI and most hdtv resolutions.

I was wondering if anyone has used this unit or have any advice regarding it. Can you give me any advice as to whether it really produces a much better picture.

I have a sky+ box with an LG lcd 26" (yeah it's small but i'm happy with it) HD ready tv connecting via scart to component and find the picture very blocky and would like to get as close to HD as possible but on a very tight budget so any reviews of this product would be very helpful.

I read on one of the threads about someone mentioning a "magic box" and was thinking that this may be what they were reffering to.

Cheers

Hello Sherrit, and welcome to the forums.

I haven't seen one of these, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. In general, with scalers you get what you pay for, and I doubt you can get much for £179. This doesn't appear to have the flexibility to pixel-match to a particular display. I would also add that a scaler generally has to perform better than the video processing in a display, and the cabability of this device is probably similar to many displays. A second-hand early DVDO or Lumagen would probably be a better bet.

regards, Nick

I have one of these VP from this 'family'. You get what you pay for and it wasn't very much in VP terms. It is dusty.....
