sony ruby and crystallio II-a dealers observation

got this today from a respected dealer of crystallio in the UK-wonder if the forum agrees:
HTML Code:
I hear the Rubies internal deinterlacing and scaling is very poor, so you will find a processor like Crystalio II will make a big difference.

I Agree 100%, primarily due to the Ruby's inability to handle 2:2 pulldown.

Adding a dedicated VP into a system will make difference.

The Crystalio 2 is the current top of the range VP available so should make a big improvement to the pq.

Does anybody know if the Lumagen Radiance with its HQV processing be able to topple the Crystalio II? The Lumagen Radiance will be releasing for more or less the same price so I was wondering if anybody who has had the opportunity to go through the specs determine if the Lumagen is better, worse or on par with the Crystalio II. Obviously upon release and testing the machine is a whole different ball game but what is the initial impression?

I'll ask Gordon at Cedia tomorrow for you.

I would love to speculate, but it really is too early for now to be sure. The Radiance will have the same fantastic scaling that is in the Vision range (Lumagen's own which happily filters out some mosquito noise too!) and the other features that make the Vision so popular (y/c adjustment, gamma adjustment, chroma filter, genlock etc etc). But what we can't tell is just how much extra Lumagen will be able to get out of the HQV chip. Given that on normal film mode work (SD and HD) there is barely anything in it between a Crystalio II and a Lumagen HDP I'd say the Radiance is going to be quite something. The real edge the C-II has at the moment is weirdo cadences, bad edits etc, and of course video mode work (where it is simply a dream to watch). How the VXP based C-II will compare to the HQV based Lumagen, will be something we'll have to wait for I guess.

@Liam, so you have been able to check out the CII? What is your impression on how good the CII scaling is in comparison to the competition (HDP/VP30)? Thanks!

I've not had much time at all with a C-II as our first stock went straight back out again. When I get our next stock (which may be years at the current rate!!) I'll be installing them so can comment better then.

Hi Haroon,

Only the same news as what is on Lumagens' site - due out 2nd half of this year.

Should be an interesting match-up between the two!
