DVI-D Cables : Single or Dual Link?

Hi,
I'm not sure which is the correct forum for this question but I know all the knowledgeable fellows hang out here

What is the difference between single and dual link and does it require the hardware to support it to make use of any advantage?

If so does anyone know if an inFocus IN76 can make use of dual link?

I assume both types can carry HDCP?

Thanks

Dual-link DVI is the double bandwidth version of DVI; it uses more of the wires in a DVI cable. You'll notice that there are all pins and no blanks in the plugs at either end.

Dual-link DVI is used in displays where resolution is HIGHER than 1920x1200. For example the Apple 30-inch Cinema Display has 2560x1600 pixels and requires dual-link DVI capable graphics cards (no that doesn't mean two single-link DVI sockets).

If your display/projector is not a high resolution dual-link DVI device then there is no point in having dual-link DVI cables. i.e. absolute waste of time for home theatre where highest resolution means 1920x1080.

Yup.

I don't believe ANY home entertainment equipment uses dual link connections (except my Quadro FX3000 GPU )

And remember that whenever people talk about HDMI, they talk about HDMI Connector A, which is equivalent to single link DVI. There is a connector B which is equivavlent to Dual link DVI, but I'm not aware that anything uses it. For video, it seems 1920x1200@60 is considered just about enough for anyone.
