scaler for pwd8

hi there ,totally new to this forum but am looking to buy a panasonic pwd8 42 ins plasma for sky+ and dvd use , i read on the plasma forum about the benefit of a scaler and was wondering how much it could benefit me if i were to get the pwd8 , or is a scaler only of benefit with say the phd8 , i dont have hd sources but may in the future when more content available but wasnt sure if a scaler has the same effect with sd sources on the phd8 screen if i pushed for that instead of the pwd8 ,though the pwd8 gets good votes.glad of some help from a novice

Hi pritchy,

Both the PWD and PHD are very good panels. The PWD is regarded as the best SD panel on the forum. Adding a scaler will make a difference to to either panel.

Have a read of this read where someone was in a very similar position to you: Scaler for SD Plasma.. Is it beneficial ?

My advice would be to have a demo of both the SD & HD panel. If you can push to the PHD then go for that and save for the scaler in the future. Check out the Forum Hardware special offers for the deals being offered by AV-Sales.

I'm on the verge of getting a PWD8 and have also purchased a Lumagen Vision DVI scaler from the classifieds here.

Roll on the 200 hrs run in time so I can get it all properly calibrated

From reading Matt's experience (and others) I don't think it'll be easy ....good job the experts are on hand then!

I'll be getting the scaler calibrated the same time as the Plasma. I will be sure to post before and after shots as well as general feedback on the panel.

BAsically for the lumagens it can be a bit cryptic to start.. liam setup the inputs of rme before he sent it out.. then we spent about half hour on the phone going over the basics.

Once you have the output set up then mapping the inputs is quite straight forward and theres plenty of info/help here and on the lumagen forum.

Cheers

Matt
